  • Questions about swapping jt 580 for ofr?

Hi guys, I was needing your expertise. I'm wanting to upgrade the JT580 tremelo in my DXMG for an original Floyd Rose. I noticed at one place I was browsing they had a low profile model listed, I know my DXMG has a recessed cavity but I have no ideal how that affects which unit to purchase. Also will the OFR fit without in modifications to the guitar i.e. routing or drilling? I'm a beginner at playing but I have been trying to learn to do as much as I can to my own gear but I'm certainly not as knowledgable as most you guys so I was just trying to figure out if I can tackle this myself without ruining my guitar.

<font size="2" face="Verdana, Helvetica, sans-serif">It should fit with no modifications - probably. I remember Newc saying that his OFR transplant in the DK2 was a little tight, but that it came out well after shaving off a little of the clearcoat in the trem cavity. I'm sure he can tell you more.

From what I've heard from other people, they fit fine without any problems. So...it may depend a bit on which type of JT580 you've have. I believe there have been three different baseplate sizes for the 580 over the years, with the newest incarnation being the smallest one.

Thanks Sunbane, I really love this guitar, I think once I swap the trem and pickups it will be awesome, maybe some day I'll be able to afford a usa Jackson but for the time this thing is serving me fine.

I bought a DXMG off 8daysafter. He swapped the trem for an OFR with no modifications. And it fits in the trem routing as if it were made for it! (ok, now i just have to cope with a lame neck, its another problem).

I was looking through online dealers that sell OFR, in particular Carvin and warmoth. On the Carvin site it says original licensed floyd rose, and the warmoth one sells the original floyd rose. Is it the same thing?? Has anyone bought ORF from either of these sites?? Which one is better?? Are there better online dealers out there?? thanx

I've actually had an OFR from both Carvin and Warmoth, and saw no difference.

Carvin uses nothing but the OFR on there guitars. That is all they sell for replacement also.

ok, heres another floyd rose question. I have a DKMG bought in 2002 which has jt580lp tremolo, after doing a search in the forum, some say the jt580lp can be swapped no problem with OFR, some say you need to do routing. I'm really confused... Any DKMG owners who swapped their tremolo shed some light please???... There seems to be no problem with this DXMG..

nevermind my above post to this thread, i'm just gonna go for it and see what happens, although any DKMG owners have any inputs will be very helpful.
