• I need DKMG info...

This may be posted elsewhere, as I was too lazy to look. If it is, can someone show me the link please? If not, I'll state my case. I'm looking into buying a guitar for under 800 bucks (Canadian), and I scoped out the DKMG which seems to be my best bet. I read reviews and spec charts, but I figured, why not ask the experts? So here I am

Any info?
Thanks in advance

Check musicians friend, DKMGT for 349.99 US. I don't know if they ship to canada or not, but you may want to look into it. I've played one before, and aside from the pickups blowing ass, it wasn't bad.

Buying it isn't the problem, the shop here where I am has 4 in stock, I just want to know how they are, pup info, any negative aspects, big positives, etc....Thanks for the input though, Deneb.

get the dkmg! wish i had the money myself. ok: carved top body, piranha inlays, 24 jumbo frets, reverse jackson headstock. depends on whether you get the 2006 or previous version. the new one has emg 81/85 active pickups. the previous version has passive emg-hz pickups and retains a gain boost aka the turbocharger. both have a licensed floyd. the older model has a jt580 which is likely to be the same on the 2006 model. you'll get the older version cheaper. try them both out if you can, then chose according to your budget and which sounds best.

Re: I need DKMG info...

Ezekiel, I can actually tell you what swayed me away from one.

A; I've got quite a few guitars (not as many as some people, but pretty much enough by my logic).

B; I didn't like them only having it in blue.

C; I don't like the EMG HZs.

That all aside. If they had it in Black or that forest or whatever, that would have been great. The pickups, I can change, so that's not a big deal. Playability, it needed a set up, and after one, it was a smoking guitar. The neck was thin, and fast (thinner than my soloist necks) but not Ibanez wizard thin (imo, from what I recall of one, not sure what neck my 7 string Ibanez has, but then again, it wouldn't be the same wizard :P )

That said, if you have the money, and are looking into one, I'd definately check it out.

Re: I need DKMG info...

Ezekiel, I have one and they're great guitars. Typical thin Jackson neck, a great player. I did replace the pickups with an 81/85 set, and the improvement was substantial. I would see how much the 2006 version with the new pickups is going to "street" at, and then see how much they are going to discount the older ones. If you can get a really good deal on an older one, then get one of those and change the pickups. But if the newer ones aren't that much more, than get one of those and you don't have to worry about the pickups. Mine is black by the way and is a very sharp looking axe Just make sure to play one first and be aware of where the volume knob is located, as it can get in the way and bothers some people a lot. I've kind of gotten used to it, but I still contemplate removing it and just using the other two knobs for a single volume and tone.

Re: I need DKMG info...

I love these guitars...I have 2 of them. Actually, one is a project in the works. Both of mine are the floyded version. Definately change the pickups...although, I've found that HZ's seem to sound better in my Jackson's than in my ESP/LTD's for instance. It's an extremely comfortable guitar and probably my favorite of all the Jackson imports...the only thing that turns me off about them is the pirahna inlay. I'm a big sharkie fan so I changed the neck to a DK2 neck but, the only reason that I did this was purely for cosmetic reasons...there is nothing wrong with the DKMG neck. It actually had a really good fret job and played very nice and the back had more of a "rawness" to it...Not as shiny...almost like touching a raw piece of wood.

This is actually what I did with my project. I just completely removed the volume knob and filled it.

Re: I need DKMG info...

i'd sooner remove the turbocharger as that's what uses the battery. i'd change the neck pup for a sustainiac or just swap both for emg 81/85's which are active - assuming they too only need a 9v battery to power them.

Re: I need DKMG info...

I'd get one - or two......three

my son and I have 3. 2 DKMGs and 1 DKMGT.

I love almost everything about em. The action was great, but the fretboard was a little rough. Like when doing extended vibratoing there is a roughness that I can feel. Pickups are OK but seem to lack anough bottom end for my taste.

the overall quality is excellent.

All it all it's a great guitar for the money.

I didn't know the '06s had '81s in em. I would have waited

Thanks everyone! I recently brought up the subject with a bud of mine, and he suggested the DK2....is he full of crap or is it really a better bang for the buck?

i'd always go for a trans finish, makes me feel it's a worthwhile investment. but now they've changed the pickups (and trem?) and all the hardware is black, they're more tempting. the pricing is less so if you don't live in usa/canada.

If you want single-coil pickups, get the DK2. The pickups are the only major difference between the DK2 and the MG-series guitars. Either guitar is good.

The thing I like about the DKMG over a DK2 is the MG is a carved archtop. To me that's what made me want one over a DK2.

Oh, also I wanted 2 HBs

Oh, alright, cause I'm actually leaning towards the DK2 now, as I like the h/s/s combo. I was hesitant about it because it was priced at almost 100 bucks cheaper than the DKMG, but I think Inazone cleared that up for me. Thanks to everyone!
