I just saw one of these at a local store, and was very surprised to see that the fretboard was glossy. It was definitely clearcoated. Why the hell would they do that? Isn't the board ebony? Way to ruin a nice ebony board.

No, no, this wasn't oil. it was a thick, hard, glossy coating.

[/ QUOTE ] The fretboard on the Rickenbacker 4001 I just picked up is that way and I dig it.
The KBRR I saw at NAMM, I don't think the fretboard was finished like that though. Scott

Re: Bond Rhoads = lacquered fretboard???
The Bond they have in a local music store also has a laquered ebony board. It was definitely laquererd. My NASL also has a laquered ebony board. It's strange, but it seems that they do this to all the Japanese ebony boards.

that's REALLY weird. i hate to ask, but are you sure it wasn't just buffed? you can buff ebony to be reflective. i don't doubt you at all, just askin. if i had one of those, i'd grab a box of razor blades and scrape that shit off.

Looks very highly buffed to me, but I've yet to see one in person. I suppose they could be clearcoated to protect those fancy-schmancy inlays, if the material is pretty thin.

Re: Bond Rhoads = lacquered fretboard???
The one I tried was definitely not laquered. I really dont think its a 'feature' and I hope it was just the lighting. Ebony is dark, and it reflects alot better then other woods, so a fine finish/polish would make it pretty glossy. My slsmg fretboard is nice and uniform aswell.

Sully, this one was definitely lacquered, and not just buffed. It looked awful IMHO, and I agree, I would scrape that crap off. It was a real turn-off.

First I also thought that the board is buffed, but if you try to feel the transition from ebony to the inlay you'll notice that there's something wrong. The transition can't be felt, because there's a coat over the board and the inlays.
