The general consensus is that they are inferior to the professional series they replaced. But the Japanese made performer series are still decent guitars.
Performer series did not replace Professional series, it was 1 step below. Performer was the "entry level" series, like the JS series is now (although "general consensus" is that Performer > JS)

The Performers weren't yesterday's equivalent to the current JS series. More like today's X series. They were below the Professional series, but above the JSs. The Performers replaced the earlier Concept series, which were also secondary to the Professionals.
Check the scan above. JS guitars were available at the same time as Performers.
It's debatable, Gary. X series had/has some cool features like sharkfin inlays, better tonewood and (on some models) binding. Let's say the Performer series split off into both X series (upper performer) and JS (lower performer). When PS series went away, JS was there to maintain the entry-level Jackson line.

Actually, as the Performer line was being phased out, the AX/S line was being phased in. They had dot inlays and no-named pickups (eventually Armstrongs), and became the X-series. The Concept line was made in Japan, and the Performers remained MIJ except for one year of Korean production. IIRC, the AX/S line was the first to be made in India, with the possible exception of the JS20/JS1/JS2 and other low-end models. The Professional logo "vanished" around the time that the Performers were replaced by the AX/S line. The X-series guitars started out with no-name pickups and dot inlays only; the "D" models (Deluxe) were the first to have sharkfin inlays, although Musician's Friend had an "exclusive" JDR (not JDR-94) with sharkfins around the same time.
The catalog continued to show the Concept JDR-94 (note truss rod cover) in place of the PS-4.
Bottom line (literally, heh): Back in the mid 90s, the Performers were the entry level Jacksons (bolt-on, dot inlays, cheaper tonewood & pups). Nowadays the JS series is (b-o, d.i., chper tw & pups).
