  • Just joined the Jackson family!

I've been lurking here for a while as i am the owner of a Charvel Model 4.

This last Friday, i took the afternoon off. Weather was nice here in Montreal, sunny and warm. Perfect for a walk down town with my wife.

At the end of the day, we stopped at a store we have here. They have books, CDs, DVDs and a not too bad musical instruments department. Wife went for the books and i, you guessed it, went to the guitar section.

I tried a bunch of guits of various prices. I had NO intention of buying anything except the cheapo Behringer tremolo pedal but they had none in stock.

I've been dreaming of getting a Strat lately but after noodling with various Teles and Strats (none were a US model), which none impressed me (for the price they were asking), i headed to the Jackson section. They had not too many models. There was that red Kelly model hanging there that i could not reach and as i was about to leave and go back to find my wife, i finaly decided to ask the sales guy to get it down from the hanger for me.

I plugged it into a cheap small Marshall and definitely started liking it the first minutes i played it. The finish was quite good and was surprised that this thing was made in India and played so well.

A few minutes later, my wife appears and say: "Wow, nice guitar!". She was expecting a huge price tag and when she saw the price tag @ 295$us (including taxes) she said: "Does it play well? If yes, get it, it looks too cool to leave it here!". I was floored! I'm not used to such spontaneous reaction from her regarding guitar gear!

We got it out of the door for 256$us (including taxes).

It's not a perfect guitar. The tuners will have to be changed eventualy and i'm not too sure about the PUs. They are quite cool for leads with my Marshall DSL50. They have a "snappin' and poppin'" kind of tone. But for rhythm they sound a bit muddy and don't have the definition of the Duncan JB i put in my Charvel recently.

It's my first guitar with a fixed bridge. Palm muting fells a bit different with that bridge. I will have to get used to it. The action is as good as my other guitars, right from the store hanger. The metallic red color is super cool, i love it. And the shape of this guitar screams metal (for me at least). \m/

So, that's about it for now! Time to get back shreddin'!!!

    Rock on everyone!

Thanks everyone! I like that cheapo Kelly so much, next time it's gonna be a real US made model!

              Rock on!

BTW, anyone knows what kind of wood are made those JS30 Kelly?

congratulations. my first jackson was a js-1. since then, i've never looked at another make of guitar. i think the kelly may be the same wood - alder, otherwise possibly cedar. the js series are made in india.

Hey Subane, does Jackson made an error by posting that the JS30 Kelly is made of alder on their web site?

Yes, and it is confirmed by the resident Jackson rep too.

Jackson have been notorious for listing faulty specs for a long while now. You will find all sorts of errors in the online spec sheets, and it was the same story when the upgrade lists for the 2006 models were published, as the RR3 and KE3 were listed with bound necks.

I would not take a spec listing from Jackson at face value.
