  • Starter Guitar

    Hi to everyone.

I'm new to playing guitar as i've only just started learning and i brought a brand new DXMG as my first guitar. And i've since been told i've wasted my money as it would be no good as a starter guitar.

What do you guys think about this?

what was their argument that it's not a good starter guitar? Is it too nice? Not nice enough?

For many people, their first guitar is a cheap piece of crap that didn't cost them (or their folks) too much money should the new student decide they'd rather play tennis than guitar. Makes sense, you don't need a $1500 instrument to decide whether making music rings your bells.

But having a decent first guitar (as yours is) isn't a bad thing. You won't struggle with ridiculously high action, crappy tone & constantly going out of tune. Any problems you are facing now are all you. You don't have to struggle with getting a handle on this new enterprise AND struggle against a substandard instrument too.

I think you've scored yourself a great first guitar. Welcome to the JCF

IMO, DXMG is definitely a step up from a "starter" guitar, which would be JS series (half the price, dots, unbound, cheaper pickups, etc.). I would've loved to have started with a DXMG. Much nicer than most people's first guitar.

My first guitar was a Yamaha acoustic that I found in my uncle's closet. I played it for a while and worked after school jobs until I had enough money to buy an electric (a Fernandes Explorer). I used to plug the guitar into the "mic in" jack of my parents' record player, as I didn't have an amp.

I better stop here, or else I'm going to start posting about how I had to walk 5 miles to school up hill both ways in the snow with no shoes and all that other crap.

Congrats on your DXMG! Everything that VitaminG said is true. I hope you stick with it

+1 to what everyone has said......well almost everything. Sorry to knock you off the pedestal QuantumRider built for you G, but nobody's perfect! :ROTF: Nice sig!

The DXMG is a good guitar for anyone, especially a beginner. Maybe the person who told you that was jealous of your cool axe! BTW, Welcome to the JCF!

The only thing I would object against in terms of getting a DXMG for a starter guitar, is the Floyd. IMO, it gives you more hassle than you need when you're just starting out. It will demand more work and proper attention than a fixed bridge.

+1, but there's no better way to learn about one than to jump head-first into the many nuances of Floyd usage/set-up. Shit, after a month or two of hangin' around here, he'll be able to tear one down to the plate and build it back in the dark!

Haha I traded a broken bicycle frame for my first guitar. A '68 Holiday Mustang-ish thing. It's a five-string 'cause one of the tuners fell out and I lost it. heh
