  • EMG in RX10D

Hi folks. I tried to search the archives for this info, but because EMG is too short a word for the search function, it wasn't much use!

Basically, I'm going to get my first Jackson in the near future and I really like the Rhoads shape, and I've decided on the RX10D. I also want to upgrade the pickups and put in an EMG 81 and 85. I've never installed pickups myself before, but I have a little bit of experience with electronics and soldering and I didn't think it would be too daunting. Just to be sure, I've been doing some reading and trying to find out exactly what I'll need to do, so I know whether it'll be okay to go ahead and get stuck in, or if I should just take it to a shop and get them installed professionally.

So, I've downloaded the wiring instructions for the EMG-ZW set off EMG's site, and had a good look at the diagrams. The problem I forsee is that all their diagrams show connections to the tone control of the guitar, and as far as I'm aware, the RX10D doesn't have a tone control, just a volume control and a 3-way toggle switch.

I'm sure EMGs can be installed in an RX10D, but I was wondering if anybody had a good set of instructions or a wiring diagram for putting them in? Or if you think I should quit being stubborn and just say "I'll get it done by someone who knows exactly what they're doing", then that's fine

I have an EMG85 at the bridge of my RX10D, nothing in the neck currently. Just wire it like the diagram shows, but ignore the tone control. Maybe I will post tomorrow a bit more detailed discroption, cause I'm drunk at the moment.

follow the 1 tone 1 volume w/ switch diagram and ignore the tone control, black wire between tone and volume pot and the other one with a square thingy also between them. that should do it!

Which EMGs do you want in your guitar?

Excellent, thanks for that. Shouldn't be too tough to do it myself then. I'm going for the typical EMG 81/85 combo.

Consider putting the 85 in the bridge position; You'll get a way ballsier rhythm tone than with the 81!

+1 The 85 sounds much better in the bridge.Coil tap the 85 so you will have a great clean tone when you run both pickups together when on a clean channel. The 81 when used in the neck position is a great clean pickup.Of course when you crank up the dirt it will kick ass.
              Really? well screw Mark Twain.

The 85 can't be coiltapped or coilsplitted though. The 89 can be splitted (or rather switched) to singlecoil operation.

You are right I was thinking 85 and meant 89 MY BAD!!
Still the 85 in the bridge.

Most of the time I find the 85 to be best in the bridge, much stronger low/mids and even hotter than the 81 believe it or not I do like the 81 in the bridge in some instinces though, like all mahogany guitars as they have a ton of low/mids already Jack.
