Welcome to the JCF, newbie!
Well, the JS series are the entry level Jacksons in the "metal" shapes (Kelly, Rhoads, King V, Warrior). They are made in India, the bodies are cedro, the inlays are plastic dots, the hardware is generally on the cheap side.
Here's an interesting review thread I did way back in 2004:

I always recommend though - if you are looking specifically for a King V - to save a little more and buy a KVX10....they are made in Japan, of a better tonewood (alder before July 2006), feature slightly better materials, + sharkfin inlays.
I'd say look for a 2002 - 2005 KVX10. They'll be MIJ, alder bodies, with the string-through (JT-390) bridge. Ser# will start with 96 or 97."Quiet, numbskulls, I'm broadcasting!" -Moe Howard, "Micro-Phonies" (1945)

Checked out your review RacerX.
I bought a cheap JS30 Kelly a few months ago. Got it for 299$canadian out of the door. Can't say enough good thing about it. Except the tuner, this cheap guitar rocks. Even the other guitar player in my band, who owns a gothic Epi Explorer with EMG81s can' believe the tone i get with my Marshalll and the cheapo Kelly.
May be i picked up a diamond among the stones but I,m very happy with it.
My best bet is if you can play a few before buying, go for it.
