  • Mounting pickup rings...

K, so I've got a guitar (dinky) with a pickguard that covers more than 50% of the body, and i was wondering, can I put on pickup rings even though the pickguard surrounds the pickups? and if so, would it look discusting?

    anyway, thanks
    -Paul

I think a pickguard with pup rings looks better than a pickguard without pup rings. I think I remember seeing that on one of Dave Murray's strats, unless I'm mistaken.

I think both Dave Murray and Glen Tipton used pickup rings on their strats over the pickguard. I think they look cool, especially if you have to cover up something underneath like a messy pickup route on the pickguard. Also I think a chrome ring on top of a black guard looks cool too.

I've got an Epi strat from the 80's with the explorer headstock and I routed the bridge for a then new J-90C oversized ring bridge pup. I kept the ring on it and it looks a little strange as it is larger but not too bad. Sounds great though, and I kept it relevant with the J-90C pickup haha.

                Ah, k, thanks guys!

Another question...the guitar is about 97% black. What colour should I look into for pup rings? I once saw a pup ring that was meant to look like carbon fiber, pretty cool if you'd ask me.

                Anyway, cheers

What about a chrome pickup ring. That is if you have chrome hardware. If the hardware is black, I think a black ring, even on the black pickguard, is still cool looking. IMO!

Shawn Lutz (I think?) has a bunch of mutts that he has built, and each pickguard has chrome rings around each humbucker. If it's done right, I think it's a boss look. go for it!
