  • KE3 and EMG's

I wanted to put an EMG 81 and 85 into my Kelly KE3, the tech at the local guitar Center told me I couldn't because,

    (a) There wouldnt be enough room for the 9v battery and
    (b) because there is no tone control the pickups wouldnt work properly.

    Is this correct????

the tech is wrong on both counts. You don't have to run a tone control with EMGs, and it doesn't take much room to stash a 9v battery.

"(b) because there is no tone control the pickups wouldnt work properly."

Sounds like this guy fits right in working at Guitar Center. He probably has no idea what the inside of a control cavity looks like! What a putz!!!!!

I believe Number of the Priest has EMGs in his KE3...the space for a battery is really tight but doable...I seem to recall his cavity cover "bowing" out under pressure

^ yea thats it naz show him that we can do his job better than him lol yes it can be done but i believe you will have to switch out the volume pot for an emg one. i had to do that when i put an 81 in one of my ibanez's. and if the battery pushes out on the cover why not just route out a little bit of space in the bottom of the cavity so the battery fits?

cool, thanks for the replys so far.
At least I know it can be done, that tech was an arrogant asshole as well as not knowing what the hell he was on about.

Anyone here do it, so I know what to look out for, any problems etc

Follow the schematic for 1 vol/1tone/3 way and just ignore the tone control and capacitor (green thingy). you will have to replace the 500k vol pot for 25k pot and mono output jack for stereo output jack.

sounds like my local retailer. they just wanna sell you another guitar. all you need is a soldering iron, soldering wire and replacement pot. retailers usually charge stupid money for something you can easily do yourself for next to fuck all.

Goddamn retailers. I had this guy I sold a set of Burstbuckers to come back a year later and harrass me because the idiot tech at the BIGGEST music chain in the country told him they were Epiphone pickups.

seems as this has already been answered
but but heres my two cents,
first off the tone pot is not needed for any pup, i never use them always disconnect them
and there is room in the cavity for a 9 volt
my bud has a KE3 and uses emgs(85 bridge/60 neck) sounds better than it did with the duncans.
semms to me the Kelly is a very bright axe so the 81 was too trebly so he went with the 85
If it's not a CHARVEL then i dont want to play it,look at it or even fuckin THINK about it!

                            Thanks Savage,
Did your buddy try the 81 / 85 combo?
I never thought about the 85/60 combination, sounds interesting!
                            Is he happy with it?

                            Anyone else??

                            Thanks

Had one in a mahogany bodied Mockingbird... very nice. Grunty and tight. Not as razor high as an 81, but pretty damn good in it's own way.
