  • Just picked up a SLSMG - review, plus COW 6 string review and sound clips

I didn't mean to. I went into the local guitar shop looking for some more elixir strings since those things rock my socks right off. The guy asked me what I needed, and I said "strings unless you have a mega nice Jackson here for some reason." He said, "I may have just the thing," and cruised over to the wall.

He grabbed this nice flat black looking guitar but I thought "fuck that, its just a dinky, I already have a guitar nicer then that" until he turned it around and I saw it was neck through.

So I bought it right there on the spot. $1,100cdn later annnd.....

Just wait til I get my COW7 in... that'll make for a good picture.

The EMG 85 and tone knob are just enough to get the clean channel to sound good on my dual rect solo, so its going to stay for awhile now. Initial impressions: this thing is WAY better built then even my C.O.W. Fucking amazing. The pots are smoother and feel more solid, and it has a much nicer jack. The finish is even more amazing and I am sure more durable too. Much much nicer tuners, these ones feel great. Intonation is way better, the sound is twangier. Sustain of course is far far better. The neck feels even better. Plays even better, I thought a guitar couldn't be any more shred-able then my COW but this one is a night and day difference.

As far as the COW goes, it is still a fucking amazing guitar. I would say it is the nicest playing guitar you can get for the price. The ebony fingerboard helps a lot - I am not a fan of rosewood much, I prefer ebony cosmetically and it also feels better... its only really matched by the kind of high grade rosewood you would get on a top end USA made guitar. It still has an even sicker distortion tone then the SLSMG does. I dunno how that works out, seeing as how they have the same bridge pickup (EMG 81) but maybe it is because there is no tone knob whatsoever. Could also have something to do with the setup. I might keep it, but its really hampered by its lacking versatility. Even though I got it only three months ago, my taste has changed a lot in that time since I've gotten big into old Metallica again. Even a clean passage like in Master of Puppets sounds awful, through my dual rectifier, if you are playing with a pick. Fingerpicking it is alright but still too bright and not that appealing.

So in summary: The COW6 is still the ultimate metal axe. Got a better super high gain sound then the SLSMG has (so far, I am going to adjust it and report back my findings), but its surpassed in all other areas - fit, finish and playability.

Sound clips of the COW6 through my practice amp ahaha (Dual Rectifier into 2x12" rectifier cab) are at http://www.soundclick.com/temps/ Quality sucks since those are, in order, the forth, third, second and first things I have ever recorded. The playing is also sloppy, but you get the idea. The top one is shit, skip it and start at the second one.

Clips of the SLSMG will come later tonight if I have time.

Damn - those are pretty sweet guitars - I've been kinda torn between the COW6 and the SLSMG - and I'm not sure I like the EMGs anyway, but they look like solid guitars. How much did you pay for the COW6? I rarely see people post prices in canadian dollars, so its nice not to have to do any conversions. (booooo math)

I'm located in Calgary, that's why I post in canadian dollars

The Jackson COW 6 string was $940 with tax, it will be more for you since there is no PST here in Alberta. The camoflauge COW is $1,170ish. The 7 strings are $200 more each for some reason, doesn't really line up with Jackson's MSRPs.

The SLSMG was $1,070 actually, $1,000 even plus tax. If you need to order one in they are probably more.

Of course thats assuming your local guitar stores operate like the one I bought this guitar from.

I am not going to lie - the SLSMG is DEFINITELY worth the extra money over the COW. I just played it for another hour and it is feeling better and better.

The EMGs are definitely nice. Having solely an 81 is not so good. It matches up very well with its close cousin the 85, but the problem with that is you then have the exact same set of pickups that comes in every single ESP guitar and is used by every metal band out there, period. I might change them to bareknuckle pickups just to get a unique sound.

After playing on the SLSMG some more I have started to like it even more then I already did (which was a considerable amount). It actually does have an equally sick high gain sound, but its got a different inflection on it then the COW does... the difference between a bolt-on neck and a neck through I would guess. I actually like how it sounds better now, it has a deeper sound. Kind of a menacing guttural yell then a satanic shriek like the COW (that's my guitar magazine moment for this post).

Playing on the high frets is also even more fun since the action is better adjusted across the whole neck. The low E will still buzz from time to time but I plan to put on a set of 11-49s elixirs and that should fix the problem and make the guitar more drop C friendly.

I didn't have time to do any recording this weekend since I had to work some overtime and jam with my band. We came up with some good shit though, Shadows Fall-style, so if I get a chance I will record that this weekend and you guys can get a good idea of what the nicest import jackson sounds like

Welcome to the board and congrats on these nice axes!
I own a COW DK6 myself and love it, though I immediately put a Seymour Duncan Distortion in there. I have also tried out two blemished SLSMGs in the FMIC outlet store in Hamburg.

I do agree on the great playability and nice satin finishes of them, but soundwise my DK6 was definitely up to par... actually even better because those SLSMGs were 2005 models with HZ pickups.

Hey whats the weight of the SLSMG compared to a regular Dinky? I played a couple of them and they felt great, but I also played a couple of LTD's and they were so light it was making me uncomfortable . . .

Also - for those of you that play other guitars than Jacksons - you have to try the Mick Thomson signature Ibanez - it's got a neck-thru mahogany body - EMG 81/60 combo - a huuuge fixed bridge with a floyd rose locking nut - thing sounds sick. And it was about 1499 CDN. I'm trying to decide between that and the SLSMG, or the DKMG (which I played today - it would be about 750 - 850 CDN)

The COW 6 is what would call really light. It is even more super lightweight then the SLSMG for some reason. The SLSMG is again lighter then the Dinky, but not by all that much.
Most LTDs fall between the COW6 and SLSMG. I really don't like LTD guitars though. I have never heard of that Ibanez before, sounds like a sweet deal, but I really dislike ibanez guitars. Big time.

The only downside of this guiatr is it has the gheyest inlay known to man kind.
