  • It's Finally Here... Trans Blue DK2M

I was at work on Thursday, when my wife sent me an e-mail.

"The postman just dropped off a huge box... Did you buy ANOTHER guitar?"

I hurried home, and opened the box, to find a ton of packing material. I cleared the packing material off the top, to find another box. I pulled the inner box out, opened it, and saw another ton of packing material. I yanked out the packing material, to find a guitar case. I opened up the case, and saw, you guessed it, MORE packing material. At this point I was knee deep in packing material in my living room

To the bro (you know who you are ) who sent this guitar to me, thanks for the excellent packing job!

    Anyhoo, on to the PORN!!!

It's a nice day today, so I took a couple of pics outside.

I've noticed that "Snow White" is the most popular finish for the DK2M here on the JCF, but I'm into transparent finishes myself, and I think I got one with a nice top

The back of the body is black, not dark blue as I had expected. But hey, it's the back of the guitar, so nobody's going to see it while I'm playing.

    And now, a review.

Neck: Earlier this year I had read some JCF'ers' reviews saying that the DK2M neck was thick. I didn't find this to be the case. I'd say the neck thickness is between that of my (ultra thin) 1988 Ontario Dinky and that of a Charvel Model 3 (two of which I have owned). The neck is totally straight (no relief) at the moment, which I think is probably due to it having been shipped from a cold Canadian winter environment to a moderate Japanese winter environment. I will probably adjust the truss rod in a few days, after the guitar "settles" to temperatures at its new home.

Bridge: This is my first JT580LP, and although I am pleased with its ability to stay in tune after dive bombs and pull ups, I am not so crazy about the trem arm itself. The short end of the "L" shape of the trem arm is longer than those of my OFR and Schaller, so that the long part of the arm floats further away from the body. I have a couple of extra OFR arm sockets, so I will see if I can swap it out at the next string change.

PU's: I had played SL2H's with Duncan JB's, and didn't like the way they sounded. However, I like the JB in this guitar. Maybe it matches the alder body better than whatever material the SL2H's are made of. As for the DUncan Jazz in the neck, I like it better than the '59 I have in one of my other Soloists.

Body: This is probably the lightest guitar that I own at the moment. My other J/C guitars are made of poplar, basswood (that weigh about the same), and ash (pretty heavy).

As I am a total retard when it comes to recording music on my PC, I will probably post a video on youtube soon in lieu of sound clips.
    Rock on bros

I LOVE that finish. I swear if that came in a reverse matching headstock, I'd be all over it.

That's what I REALLY hate about the JT580. I tried changing the arm with the schaller one and it fit .

That's beautiful. How does the maple board strike you feel wise?

                Thanks all

                ZZB-

The maple fingerboard feels "dry" for lack of a better word, compared to my rosewood and ebony boarded guitars. Not that it's physically dry, just the "feel" of it. Maybe "crisp" is a better word...

Did you change out the socket too? Or were you able to screw the Schaller arm right onto the JT580?

No need to change out the socket. I just screw the Schaller arm right on and it fit perfectly.

It's a real beauty, congrats to you!

All trans blue japanese Jacksons I've seen recently had a black body back (trans red as well, I think). Seems to be the standard.
With my semicustom Jackson Stars I was actually asked whether I wanted the back to be transparent green as well.

BTW, the SL2H has an alder body as well... but no two guitars sound alike, so you probably just got lucky with the tone.
I also like the Jazz better than the '59 in the neck.

To be honest, I didn't really GET why everyone was raving about the DK2M. However, that guitar would give you GAS. Great photos too. Looks like a lovely guitar. Congratulations!

Any chance you could post a photo of it side on? Just wondering how the blue top joins with the black back (and sides?)...

                              Naz-

Thanks! I just took a Schaller arm off of one of my Grover Jackson Soloists and tried it on for size. A perfect fit, just as you said

                              Speiro-

Not only does the neck look good, but it also feels great! I think that the back of the neck is done with a satin finish, because it's not regular "clearcoat" for sure.

                              Shadowcat-

Which finish did you end up selecting for the back of your guitar?
Did not know that about the SL2H. But you're right, no two guitars are exactly the same.

                              Ken-

I would be happy to take another photo from the side tomorrow, when the sun is shining again. Natural lighting is the biggest factor in taking good photos, IMHO.
