  • Scored a Rhoads Pro

Got this backdoor off the Bay.

It's been kind of modded, but at the base it's still a late 80s/early 90s Rhoads Pro with all the touches - sharkfin inlays, bound neck and headstock, and neck-thru. I might reroute the thing for a trem and change the pickups once I get it, but I think it's a pretty good find for the price.

Whaddya guys think? And does anyone know anything about these 'Fury' pickups?

I'll post better pics once it arrives, which should be in a few days.

Post pics when you can I'd like to see it up close.I would reroute and put the floyd back in and refinish.Maybe a bengal that would be cool

I'm thinking of refinishing, but that'd be pretty expensive. The color isn't that bad now.

As for new bridges, I can't decide between a Kahler or Floyd Rose. I hear the Kahler's a lot easier to tune and maintain than the Rose - any opinions?

i think you should play with the thing, before you make decisions to cut it open

Well, of course. Just saying that when I decide to upgrade to a trem from a fixed bridge (which won't be anytime soon, but still) I might have to make a choice.

I just hope I got a good deal for my money.

Don't know what you paid but it is a modded guitar so the value would be lower. If it had a floyd then thats what I would go back with. And a refin if done properly could only help the value later on.

I saw that one on ebay, IIRC it was a 550$ BIN. How much did you get it for?

I have a RR PRO on it's way too!

Congrats! The pro is great quality, nice score! I would have gone for a Rhoads myself, but I sit down to practice too much. I would leave it alone, and just get another one with a floyd later down the road.
                Cheers!

550, including shipping. Wasn't too bad.

                      It's finally here!

I'm letting it warm up in the case, and I'll have pics up by tonight. Opened it to take a look, and daaaamn, it is sweet.

                      The case is HUGE, though.

                        Also, the number's J000162.

From the Jackson serial number page:

After the spring of 1990, only custom neck-thru's were given "J" numbers; any production Soloist, Kelly, King V, etc. were also considered "USA" models and given "U0****" numbers. There are exceptions to this rule. Sometimes you will find production neck-thru's from the 90's with "J" or "RR" numbers instead of "U" numbers; this usually means it was a prototype of some kind made in the custom shop. Also, just so you know we aren't perfect, there are a scattering of Rhoads guitars out there with "J" serial numbers instead of the traditional "RR" number (oops!).
So, oh man. It's potentially a prototype guitar.

                        I'm pumped.

No, Extant, yours is a 1990 Japanese Rhoads PRO. The headstock says "Professional". A USA model wouldn't say that. But it's a super quality instrument nonetheless.

That's a MIJ guitar, not USA. Seems like a low serial too. Mine will be J00482..still waiting for it to arrive. The Canadian post is so damn slow. It's been sitting in one place for one week now. I hope everything is ok with it...

                              Ah. Thanks, Henrik.

The guy I bought it from said he got it in 1988-89 or so, so I'm guessing he just got his dates a bit mixed up.
