  • Need help selecting a new guitar!

    Hey guys and gals,

It's time for me to finally get my first Jackson. I've wanted one for years, and with a generous tax return coming back, I can justify picking one up. My budget IS somewhat limited, so an import it is, but I'm fine with that.

My current guitar is a 1989 Carvin DC125. Pics, etc. are in the Guitars By Other Manufacturers forum. I had an import Hamer Californian, but my guitarist left it in his trunk, water got in, fretboard lifted. So, back to the drawing board. The style I play is progressive/melodic metal. Stuff like Opeth, Katatonia, Pink Floyd, Porcupine Tree, Megadeth, etc. There's samples in my sig for a better idea of my sound.

So, I'm looking somewhere between $300 and $600, hopefully on the lower side, and used is fine. I've used both neck-thrus and bolt-ons, so that's not a big deal either. I've been looking at the DK2, DK2M, and DXMG mainly. Especially the DK2, since you can find them for like $325 on eebs. I'd be fine with another shape, but I dig the look of binding. I'd also prefer a fixed bridge, but it's hard to find a DK2T used.

I leave it to you, JCF cohorts, to show me the way.

If you're up for trying out a Floyd, give the Charvel Predator a try. I have one and it's by far my favorite guitar of the ones I've played. The neck is nice a fast yet not too thin, the body is contoured nicely to fit with my arm, and with a pickup upgrade it sounds fantastic. The stock pups are very strong in the mids and fairly hot. I put a JB in the bridge to clean things up a bit. I get compliments on it everywhere I take it and it's cool having a guitar that not many people know of.

They're usually found from $250-$350 with a hardshell.

Thanks for the suggestions guys - I should mention that I'm looking for sharks and 24 frets, if possible. I know that I'm being moderately picky, but I want my first Jackson to be one I'll be happy with for a long time.

any thoughts on a charvel model 6? you also might get a used rr5 or jackson soloist if you have some luck on ebay in that price range.

Yeah, I didn't really think of the model series, but that wouldn't be bad either. If I could find some sort of early 90s Pro that'd be cool, but it seems like everybody's all over those lately. Decisions, decisions.

If you don't have any problems with the smurf hat headstock then you can grab 2 dxmgt's for 600$! They have the sharkfins and a fixed bridge. I think they look great and go stupidly cheap on e-bay. I've seen them go for under 200$ in near mint condition Just watch e-bay. Nobody has interest in them and plenty of them are being listed cheap

Other than these I have owned dk2's and have a dxmg. Never played a dk2m but have a dk2le. I can easily say I like maple 10 times better than the rosewood... Moreover 2 hum configuration is always better imo.. So if you're not going to grab 2 Dxmgts then dk2m will be the best choice. My 2 cents

How do the DXMGTs compare quality-wise with the others? I've played the DK2 and DK2M, and both played wonderfully.

I haven't played one yet But I guess they're guitar center exclusives and they can be even better than dk2,dk2m or dxmgs. My dxmg is the same as my old dk2s qualitywise...

That's cool. I'll try to swing by a GC at some point and see if they have one in stock to try out.

I don't have any idea what Sinistas thinks about it but blocking a trem is really easy. I have a Jackson with a blocked trem, it stays in tune incredibly well and sounds badass! I personally prefer a blocked trem over a fixed bridge due to the tuning issues and the more comfy feel of trems for my right hand

Again, I'm not against trems - my Cali had one. It's mainly that I'm horrible at restringing them

I might have a lead on a RR1T that IS over my budget, but oh well. haha
