Joe, does playing your MM gives you dirty/colored fingertips, more than normal?

I get that playing my Bond, but I bought it second hand, haven't changed strings yet, nor cleaned it, so it could be the strings or dirty board rubbing off.

BTW.: regarding this "coated" fingerboard. I recognize this finish from when I stripped the back of a maple neck and gave it something called Trip Trap Danish Oil. The oil was brushed on, sat for a while soaking, and then wiped off. Then I polished it with a synthetic, very hard sponge. After the oil hardens (a couple of days or so), followed by a final sponge polish (which build up heat), the finish is very smooth, very hard and bordering to shiny looking. VERY NICE feeling, non-sticky, when playing that guitar. The Bond fingerboard looks similar on the surface.

No, it hasn't at all. It doesn't even show any finger marks on the fretboard yet either, but my old Carvin DC400 did. Guess I need to play it a lot more.

The comments about the recent ebony fretboards sound a lot like the comments about recent rosewood fretboards. The DK-2 neck I have has an abnormally shiny fretboard, and I've seen other members call recent rosewood boards "plastic looking", "waxed", etc.

So I think they're giving all fretboards the same kind of treatment. I don't know what it is they're doing to them, but I would think that JCMI's official explanation sounds reasonable(?).

"waxed" is a good description, now if they are just buffing these so they are shiny they are REEALLLY uber buffing them cuz it feels like a plastic waxed paper coating and unlike any other Ebony boards I have ever seen and felt.

I'm not pissed about it, it just feels much different. But the Cow is fun to play and feels overall nicer then the DKMGTFF I used to own.Like I mentioned before it's a somewhat thin lightweight body and comfortable. Not too shabby for an import. It has standard Jackson tuners which I might want to upgrade to Sperzels or something locking at some point.

The other guitarist of my band just bought a japanese Roswell Rhoads model from ebay this week, I played it a few hours ago. The guitar is totally mint, and the rosewood fretboard is very slick and shiny.

It's definately not laquered though, and the Roswell Rhoads has been discontinued since... when? So whatever they do to fretboards, it's not new.
Unlike the previous owner, my buddy is going to really play this guitar. How about that, I'll report back in a year if the fretboard is still shiny....?

And if it's not, you won't?

I believe, besides THE BIG FAT THINGS TO CHANGE on the current "Jackson Administration", like, better customer support, bring sanity back to the Custom Shop, etc. One of the things Jackson should do is "renew" the models a bit. And I don't mean that they should add crazy looking pointy guitars that look like someone fell asleep at the routing machine and made a zig-zag over the wood.

I just mean, regular models (USA, of course) but adding more variations, pickups, looks, options. I mean, to try and compensate for the fact that not many people will order Custom made Jacksons since the price increase and the bad packaging, missing items, etc.

If I were to buy a "stock" USA guitar, no doubt, it will be a Jackson, hands down. I'd buy a KV2 anyday. But, since there are custom shops, (unfortunately, Jackson's should be at "rehab"), I won't be buying anymore Jacksons anytime soon.

But, looks like a great guitar, I have a thing for those single pickup configurations and no inalys.

My Rico is getting no inlays on a full beautiful ebony board, with abalone purfling and white binding. That sounds like an orgasm.

Maybe Jackson uses something like ColorTone Finishing Oil. I use it, and it gives my ebony boards a nice finish.

I'll see if I can dig up the thread, where he called out a Jackson employee who was online here... saying he was full of shit. That was a lame and stupid remark for shure, but interesting that you see the same gloss on your, otherwise very cool looking Cow. Congrats!
Did I really say he was full of shit? I don't remember that. How rude. :ROTF:

Regardless, I maintain that the board on that KB had something on it. I don't know what, but I don't believe that it was just polished.

I played an SLSMG with the shiny fingerboard. It totally feels like plastic. I just sold my import BCR set neck warlock deluxe with the same type of fretboard. It's just weird.
