I love my 81, I wouldnt switch it for anything, but im tempted to try a set of 81/85 in my les paul, im getting a bit tired of the stock epi pickups, their a bit muddy when I use them with my amp after i've set my amp up for the rhoads. The only other pickups I really like are EMG HZ H4's I love them to death in my ESP MH 250.

I finally got the blackouts and they are great. They are so good, I'm switching my EMG's out for them. I'm actually gonna keep the 85 as a neck pickup in my les paul and switch the bridge out for a blackout. The blackout bridge does resemble an 81, but thicker, warmer, crisp highs (soloing sounded much better with the blackouts than the 81) as a bit more growl than an 81, but cleaner. I recommend the Seymour Duncan blackouts. The output was much higher than the 81 and even the 85 and there's a hint of more gain with the blackouts. I can see why die hard EMG fans are switching over to the Duncan blackouts. Don't knock it till you try it. For passive pickups, I really do like the EMG HZ H4's..they have that nice high gain bite to them.

Cool. I just ordered a SD SH-10 "full Shred" for one of my Jacksons. The other three have Dimarzio Super Distortions in them.

I do have a "Bill and Becky" Bill Lawerence L-500XL in my Dean ML. It screams! It replaced the "USA" Bill Lawerence that I had in it before. The "USA" was loud but at the expense of tone. The "Bill and Becky" is the way to go if someone wants an l-500xl.

I'm surprised no one has brought it up yet, but I think that the Seymour Duncan Invader would be a great pick up for you to try.

              Here's a few choices.

Duncan Custom - A great all-around pickup. Will do high gain metal just as well as it does anything else. Great midrange, thick bottom, and smooth high end.

Mighty Mite Motherbucker - Super high output (around 21k), great for thick distortion.

Duncan Dimebucker - Similar to the Bill Lawrence. Sounds gritty in some guitars, but I had one in my RR Custom, and it sounded killer. Very hot, but smooth.

GFS Power Rails/Crunchy Rails - I haven't tried this one yet, but I've used their Crunchy PAFs with great success, and I have heard a lot of people really like these.

DiMarzio's got the D Activator and D Sonic, nothing called a Detonater.

I really like the duncan sh-10. It's has high output, but it is really clear sounding on the other side.

And if oyu want to go passive again, Duncans blackouts are great. Those are more fun then EMGs, I think.

I just put an SH-10 in a Jackson Rhoads bolt on. This may very well be my new favorite pick up. High output, bright but not harsh, excellent harmonics and chunky all in one. Guess that is why they call it the "full shred"!

Duncan Invader, or if you want to try and find something old school (over used term I know) locate yourself a good old Jackson J-95.

They were only to be had in Charve Model 5A's and Charvel Model 88's. I'm sure that you could have probably ordered them in a custom from the custom shop back then (I would have if I had had the cash for a custom).

Absolutely AWESOME sounding passive pickups. As a matter of fact I am constantly looking for one myself at the moment to trade out the stocker in my Model 5FX.
