  • dx7 or dr7?

    hey all,

    new guy here....

i had a jap dr7 a few years ago which i sold for a stupidly low price, and a d?7 has come up locally-but i can't tell if it's the indian or jap model....any pointers?i thought the indian ones had unbranded pickups but it seems not-if H.C is anything to go by.

    cheers!

Didn't the Japanese ones come with brushed chrome hardware?

AFAIK Jap was brushed chrome, Indian was regular shinny chrome.

Also, I seem to remember something about the headstock logo. If it's realy small and looks weird it's Indian.

If the serial number starts with a 9 it's definitely a Japanese model.

Not always. There are plenty of cases where that would be incorrect and misleading. However, a bolt-on Jackson that has a 7 digit serial, AND the first digit being a 9, is japanese. UNLESS it is a parts mutt.

Really? I thought all Japanese Jacksons began with a 9 and only Japanese axes had a serial digit beginning with a 9.

Actually, I kow already of one Jap Jackson that doesn't begin with a 9, my JJ4!

The import neck-through Jacksons and Charvels (MIJ) have/had 6-digit serials whose leading digit is the last number of the year it was made (0 for 1990 and 2000, 1 for 1991 and 2001, 9 for 1989 and 1999, etc).

Indian bolt-on Jacksons have 8 or 10 digit serials, of which the earliest ones started with "98".

I don't know what the Korean serials off the early Performer models looked like.

I would also expected USA Custom Shop bolt-on serials to hit 9### soon, but I'm not really "in" on the situation with the USAs, so I could be off there.
