I dont get why everyone bags on EMGs,there is no better pickup for metal IMO.I do like the SD blackouts they have a more rounded tone than the emgs to me.The dimarzio detonater is pretty nice as well

I am still trying to decide if I will try an 85 or not, but the real choice is should it go in my Explorer or Les Paul?

Have you tought going passive? I just put aa Dimarzio ToneZone in my JS30 Kelly and it now sounds very warm with good note definition. I can't wait to try it out on next Tuesday with my DSL50...

My current favorite bridge pup is the Dimarzio Norton or Air Norton depending on how much output you want. They seem to work in just about any guitar. IMO, EMG's are great for about a month, then I get sick of them.

DM live wires are nice to for active pickups.Smoother than the 81/85 combo.
Give me Jim Rolph or WCR pickups and I'm happy.

The Les Paul or explorer Q .Put an RS upgrade kit in and the mud will be gone and you will have a Gibson that sounds killer.
When my fire burst L.P.comes in its getting the kit first thing.

That is the first thing I am doing when and if I get an RR24. I learned with my Epi Zakk Wylde LP that I love the sound of the 85 as a bridge pup way more than an 81.
I would so snatch that up it if were 24 frets

81's go in the neck doooood, your supposed to put the 85 in the bridge!!

trust me on this one. swap it for the 85 and you won't look back. However if you're more accustomed to passive pickups, you might want to give the JB a spin if it's midrange that you're after.

I'm with Yngwie on this subject, i.e. don't use the pickups for distortion use only low to mid output ones and then let the amps do the distortion-work. This gives the best tone IME!

                    good luck,

I've heard many reccomend the full shred it's apaprently similarly tone wise to the jb with less highs...

Having swapped the 81 and 85 in my Ran that sitll ahs emg's i'd reccomend the 85 for more modern metal that requires chrushing rhythm, it's also smoother for lead tones aswell jmo...
