It's your guitar, do what ever you think needs to be done to make it right for you. You said you'll probably never sell the thing so go ahead.

Just have it done professionally. There's nothing worse than ruining a guitar with a hack DIY job. (Not that I think you couldn't do it, just saying. )

I tought you were happy with the 7330? What happend?

Actually I am very happy with the 7330, it's a great bridge. It's just that I am kind of anal, and would like to have a 3310 on my 1986 King V to be more period correct. But, they were like $100 more, so I didn't do it at the time.

If you don't like the frets or the bridge, why do you even own this guitar?

              Only the trems require routing.

Apm 3300 and 7330 doesnt need any kind of routing. They are all flat.

                  You're asking me?!

Did this a few years ago. Replaced the Kahler with a stopbar/TOM, covered the whole thing in snakeskin fabric. I think Dan74 owns it now. Last I heard he was happy with it.

I say go for it, though I wouldn't do a Kahler. Maybe a Floyd, even if it's a flatmount (though that'll run you about $400+ )

Well to be honest the frets have some good wear, so theyll need replacing soon, which is why Im going with SS.

As for the bridge... well, I love Kahlers, and it has one. But I like trems also. So aside for a small round under the trem, the Kahler trem is a direct bolt on. The guitar will still look exactly like it did before the swap.

OK I'm confused, doesn't a Kahler trem route look like this?

Sounds like he's gonna do it anyway. I wouldn't.

Yes that is a Kahler rout. But the Kahler hardtail is the same size as the Kahler trem... so either way, the rout would never be seen.

I think if you routed it for a trem and in the future put the fixed bridge back on, even though the route wouldn't be visible, it would NOT be the same guitar. The reason is the cavity under the fixed bridge would negatively impact the coupling with the body (reducing sustain/tone/etc). Just my 10c anyway.

It would be wise to make a plug that fit the route so that if you did put it back together at a later time, you'd have a solid mass under the bridge.

I say go for it. You've already stated you wouldn't sell it, and even if you changed your mind later I doubt you'd run into heavy opposition to the trem.

+1...When I did this on my King V, I had the route expanded to a perfect rounded rectangle, then a plug of the same wood (maple in my case) was cut, with the grain going in the same direction. The plug was very tight and glued in place, with a mixture of sawdust and glue filling in the tiny gaps.
