  • DK2M necks and other jackson necks in general

hi all, first post here. been lurking around a bit.

i have a 1993 king V std... say what you want about pointy guitars, this guitar has the best neck in the world. mojo galore! fits my hands perfectly. I put in new pickups long time ago, and it was my main guitar for a long long time. but now, it's old, and the frets are worn... i will get it refretted and it will be a good guitar again. but i am getting tired of having a pointy guitar. I got a EBMM jp6, and still having a very difficult time getting used to the neck. so i'm gonna try a dinky next. i'm not trying a soloist because, iirc, they tend to be a mm larger and wider then the dinky.

in my recent trips to GC and sam ash, i've played several of the new jacksons. i must say, their necks have gotten chunky! i just dug up the neck dimensions on my 93 kingV (1 11/16 nut width, 19mm at first fret, and 21mm at 12th fret) which is the same identical measurements as the modern DK2M's (1 11/16 nut width, .735" at first and .810 at 12th, do the conversion, you'll see that they round off to the same figures as the 1993). But why does it feel so chunky to me at the store? both old and new necks have the satin finish, both MIJ, both have the scarf cut, both maple neck. the only difference seems to be the DK2M i'm looking at has maple fingerboard. but even other dinky's with rosewood fingerboard are still chunkier then the old 93 neck.

i realize i have a problem. i'll admit i'm a neck junkie to the point of being at cork sniffer level... i will speak to my therapist about it :ROTF:

    what gives?

Your king probably has a speed neck. It maybe the same fretboard width but it is thinner. If you want a thin neck your best bet is to find an old charvel model series(86 being the thinnest) or a jackson performer series.

The DKMG and DKMGT models tend to have thinner necks. I'm not sure if they are still like that, though... it's been a while since I tried a one of them in a store, and my own DKMGT is from 2002.
I can certainly relate to your experience about the chunkier necks nowadays.

Try to see if you can snag a Dinky EX (pro series, from Japan) from around 93 or 94, I got mine for about 300 bucks. It's most likely the thinnest neck i've ever played on and is a very good bang for the buck.

Actually the older bolt-on KVs didn't have the speed neck that they do now, except the Mustaine.

The mid-90s KV3 I had felt thicker than the KVX10BGF I have now.

After just a quick glance I thought that was an Ibanez

I don't know... both my 06 soloist and 07 Dk2m feel failry thin. I have a 90 Ibanez S540LTD with an Original Wizard I....one of the thinnest necks out there.

My Jacksons are a little thicker...but I wouldn't call them thick. The current 24 fret Prestige Wizard neck is very close to my DK2M neck...in terms of "thickness".

              That's my experience.

S-Man the original Wizard necks were the thinnest things I have played. I have one on a 540 Power. I am still kicking myself as I was too late to buy a Sabre neck the other day and it is a chunkier version of the Wizard. I want to swap the Sabre neck on my Power.

I hear ya...thinnest neck I've played too. I've heard there are thinner..but have never played anything thinner than my 90 Wizard I.

Additionally, they are 430mm radius which allows for some low action.

Anyway..I also have a 06 S2170 with a prestige Wizard II which sucks. I'd take the DK2M neck over it anyday. The S series wizard II has a funky profile that reminds me of a 2x4.

BTW....the current 22 fret Wizard II availible on the S series guitars has a different profile than the 24 fret RG Wizard II.

I have to disagree with you on the DK2M... for a Jackson, (IMO) it has a very chunky/thick neck. Mind you, I love it, i think it feels better than the [VERY!] thin necks.

I don't know what to say...I've had a couple of them and they sit right next to my Ibanez and Soloist???

                      Maybe I've been lucky???

i know that jackson necks can be weird
my dk2 neck feels completely different than my dk2s neck.. even though they are supposed to be the same....
If the crowd is shouting for an encore, but the sound guy is shaking his head, ignore him and play anyway

i think that's a good thing though ... shows that it isn't COMPLETELY machine-produced, ya know? ...or they just have really bad machines.
