I hope I don't get flamed for this...
Greetings all. I'm new here to the forum and could use some guidance with a DXMG I just picked up.
To back up a bit, I've been a huge Jackson fan since forever and bought my first-a slightly used Stealth-back in late 94(?)-ish: shortly after I picked up a week-old JDR-94 (yes I know the hardware and trem are poor at best, but read on).The only mods to both are the trems have been blocked and I replaced the stock pups with EMG 81's-other than that they are as they were new and have been my main stage and studio guitars to this day. I've never had to do even a setup on either, which is insane to me considering the amount of abuse these have taken.
Thanks to comments I've read here on the forum I just bought a new DXMG from MF, thinking if these old Jacksons have been so good, newer must be better. Wow was I wrong, at least with this particular guitar. Compared to my other 2, this is one is so much more difficult to play and I'm seriously considering returning it soon.
The pickups with my rig-a Soldano HR50 and another second rack setup-don't work and will be replaced with an 81, which is no concern. The main worry I have is the neck compared to my other 2 Jackson's feels like a baseball bat, and the string tension is high enough to make playing difficult, particularly when compared to the JDR. I dropped the bridge to it's lowest and the action is still pretty high, much higher than the other 2. The intonation seems good but damn this thing is hard to play!
I have a pretty good base to work with in the Stealth and the JDR and by buying the DXMG I was looking for something different, something better. Looking at the DX it's just so gorgeous but playing it for me is quite the contrary. So I'm at a loss as to what to do with this. I'm considering picking up another JDR, putting an 81 in and filling the other 2 pickup cavities and making the guitar I want.
I've read of others positive experiences here with the DXMG and I'm wondering am I just crazy? Are the playability issues things that can be addressed with a setup? I mean, what could I realistically expect from this?
