I hope I don't get flamed for this...

Greetings all. I'm new here to the forum and could use some guidance with a DXMG I just picked up.

To back up a bit, I've been a huge Jackson fan since forever and bought my first-a slightly used Stealth-back in late 94(?)-ish: shortly after I picked up a week-old JDR-94 (yes I know the hardware and trem are poor at best, but read on).The only mods to both are the trems have been blocked and I replaced the stock pups with EMG 81's-other than that they are as they were new and have been my main stage and studio guitars to this day. I've never had to do even a setup on either, which is insane to me considering the amount of abuse these have taken.

Thanks to comments I've read here on the forum I just bought a new DXMG from MF, thinking if these old Jacksons have been so good, newer must be better. Wow was I wrong, at least with this particular guitar. Compared to my other 2, this is one is so much more difficult to play and I'm seriously considering returning it soon.

The pickups with my rig-a Soldano HR50 and another second rack setup-don't work and will be replaced with an 81, which is no concern. The main worry I have is the neck compared to my other 2 Jackson's feels like a baseball bat, and the string tension is high enough to make playing difficult, particularly when compared to the JDR. I dropped the bridge to it's lowest and the action is still pretty high, much higher than the other 2. The intonation seems good but damn this thing is hard to play!

I have a pretty good base to work with in the Stealth and the JDR and by buying the DXMG I was looking for something different, something better. Looking at the DX it's just so gorgeous but playing it for me is quite the contrary. So I'm at a loss as to what to do with this. I'm considering picking up another JDR, putting an 81 in and filling the other 2 pickup cavities and making the guitar I want.

I've read of others positive experiences here with the DXMG and I'm wondering am I just crazy? Are the playability issues things that can be addressed with a setup? I mean, what could I realistically expect from this?

Sounds like you hate it... two options; 1.) send it back. 2.) give it a full setup and some new pups and see if that changes your mind. To me it sounds like you're just looking for a reason to keep it that might just not be there.

I agree with 1) Send it back.

Yeah, I think you're both right-thank you. Guess I'm looking for something that may or may not be there.

my dxmg also has a chunky neck, feels alot like a mex. telecaster to me, and rather harsh action to boot. but mine has a dimarzio up front. i like my kelly better, but i like my dxmg ok, i plan on a total set up when i can.

I was going to buy a DXMG but waited and then discovered the PS4 (same as your JDR)

I love the thin neck, and it's true the DXMG has a fatter neck.

But the DXMGs I tried were good quality, it's sounds like you may have a dud, personally I think the JDR is a better guitar for me

Good point-thank you. The DXMG is definitely a good quality guitar, but like you I'm learning the JDR is the better for me. In practice tonight I had the chance to compare the DX to my brother's DKMG (similar neck and hardware) and he thought the DX was set up pretty decent, minus the low E buzz. He then played the JDR and laughed at how tiny the neck is and how easy it is to play. The DK is a nicely done guitar though...sucks thinking about sending that back but if it isn't working...

I think the DKMGT on mine is more of a "medium" neck, not quite as thin as my Model 88, or Ibanez RB10. Not as thick as the Hamer Phantom. It does seem to have a flat profile,
                  "D" shaped.
Absolutely no problem with neck quality on my DK...I have tried out a couple of DXMG's I
didn't really like, but it seems you have gotten a lemon.

Send it back and spend a little more for a DK2 or DK2M....you won't be sorry.

Actually, you ought to spare yourself the trouble of shipping it back and give it to your brother if he liked it so much.

                      But then again....................

nah, send it back and find another JDR - sounds like that is what you are really looking for. I think I just saw one on flea-bay last night in fact.

                      good luck.

Send it back , the dx necks are chucker. Find yourself an old charvel model series neck thru.

Was it ever explained as to why the X Series went from alder to basswood? Cost-cutting? The retail price is still the same as it was 3 years+ ago. I don't seem to remember anyone asking for it.

I thought the neck on my (ex-)DXMG was thin and the tone I got from the alder body (even with the HZ pups still there) gave it very nice mid-range.

Maybe the older DXMGs had thinner necks. I'm not sure about that model in particular, but various people have mentioned the newer imports having thicker necks than earlier versions of the same guitars. My DK2M has a thicker neck than a Dinky XL, Stealth TH-2 or Concept JDX - all early/mid `90s models. It's comfortable to me, but I can see where it might not be for some people.

A JDR/PS4 is a great base for modding, and are reasonably priced, so I think your situation can be resolved easily.
