  • RR pro pro!

I just bought a RR professional pro on ebay for 750$.

The guy got 2 pickup sets for me to choose from.

The EMG Zakk Wylde set (85 and 81)

    Or

TB-4 at bridge and Pearly Gates at Neck.

I mostly play Black/death metal but I also like to get a good clean sound.

    What do you think?

The EMGs... but put the 85 in the bridge and the 81 in the neck.
I feel my soul go cold... only the dead are smiling.

You could go either way. I put an X2N in the bridge and an Air Norton in the neck, but I have a set of EMG 85/81's that I've been contemplating dropping in.

The TB4 is a decent pickup; I've never heard the Pearly Gates in person.
        The Guitars:
Jackson USA SL2H, Jackson Performer PS-4, Gibson Les Paul Studio Gothic, Ibanez JS-1000, B.C. Rich Mockingbird ST, Martin GPCPA5 Acoustic, 14 Warmoth customs, Ibanez Artcore AS73, Ibanez Prestige SR1000EFM Bass
        The Amps:
Peavey JSX 212 with JSX 412 cabinet, Ampeg B2R with Ampeg Portaflex PF210HE cabinet

I did this on a RR and it made a big difference (85 at the bridge).
No honey, I have always had this Jackson....

As much as I prefer passives, I think you'd be better off with the EMG's for the music you want to play.
Takeoffs are optional but landings are mandatory.

I tried various passives - Invader, Custom, DiMarzio FRED, in my RR3. Didn't like any of them much.

Got a set of Blackouts and now the thing is a monster. So, I'd probably say you should get EMGs although I've never played them but I presume they're pretty close to Blackouts. Just not as good!

You might want to put the 81 in the bridge if you plan to detune for death metal. I have an 81 in the bridge of my RR24 which is tuned to C standard and it's about right. I had an 85 in there and liked it for the standard to whole step down stuff but i changed back to the 81 before i went 2 whole steps down.

It also depends what kind of amp and other stuff you are running it through..

I get a great crunchy sound out of the bridge on my KV2 with my Duncan Trem Bucker.. It kicks ass.. I'm using a Marshall Valvestate.. It sounds great..

                    Just my 2 c again...

Go with the EMG's. I have an 81 in the bridge and an 85 in the neck of my RR3 and I'm very happy with it for metal.

if you want to sound like every other "black metal band" today, get the EMG's.

but real black metal sounds like it was recorded on a boombox.
