New Paint Job

Well, I did it and I have no regrets.




Not a great shot but this needs to be shot with my 35mm SLR to capture it right due to the glass flake in the clear. I am going to try a shot in the sun (if we are lucky enough to get any tomorrow) with the digital to see how it looks.

Either way, it is Lexus Diamond White with Chrysler PT Cruiser Intense Blue Pearl on the bevels, then the first two coats of clear have just a dash of Deep Purple Pearl and Ice Pearl then two straight clearcoats on top of that. The purple pearl and Ice pearl were filtered so that only pearl smaller than 200 microns was sprayed. No big flakes for me, which is just 'fine'.

This next pic shows the blue with light on it and you can see the 'spots' in the white that are the glass flakes. They screw with the digital camera royally. The lightbulb on the ceiling is reflecting much clearer in person as the camera is having problems deciding on what to focus on...lol



The best part is my Floyd Rose Pro now 'fits' the body perfectly! The ice pearl is iridescent, which matches the colors of the MOP inlays nicely. This was well worth the work and I really have a one of a kind RR3 now.

Made in Japan but improved in the USA.

Thanks! The damn camera doesn't do it justice, so I am off to get film for my old school 35mm SLR tomorrow. One good thing about the colors I used is that they are the colors of my Mustang (Diamond White) and motorcycle (Intense Blue Pearl), so I can prove it is mine beyond a doubt...lol!

I was a bit anxious doing it as I had never painted a guitar before nor have I sprayed poly on wood, but I read up on it and went to town. It was so fun now I am planning on doing my Peavey Patriot in the blue pearl with glass flake and coral pearls, and topping it off with a white pearloid guard.

I am a glutton for punishment. Plus I am teaching our 13 year old son how to spray with an HVLP gun and airbrush. He put the base primer coats on, and I let him airbrush the first coat on the bevels. He is learning about nasty chemicals and how to handle them properly, and he loves messing with the equipment in the shop. Now I have to hope that he don't damage his guitar so he can paint it too.

Very sharp...love the pearl thrown in there...did the same to my bike, it really makes the paint "pop"

Not yet, and I am not sure I will now. I was thinking of going white with blue script on the headstock face but after putting it back together I really like the black/white. So now I am thinking of doing a MOP inlay for it instead, maybe another winter project?

Yes they are, and because I wanted to learn how to inlay and I had some extra time last winter. I wrote about it here, and there is a writeup about it that I link to in that thread.

No sun today, but I did grab some 35mm film and I am going to try shooting it later this evening. I have other pics I took during the job and I will post some of them in a bit. We are supposed to have sun tomorrow, but this has been one sucky summer here on the south Oregon coast. Almost constant mid-60's and foggy during the day and clear and in the low 50's at night.

Sucks, but we do have a long indian summer that can last into November that compensates us a bit. It always seems that the hotter they are inland from here, the foggier we get here.

At least we aren't on fire like northern California.

I will post some more shots of the work in a bit. I have left the case open and every time I walk past it I start drooling...lol! The paint is smoother than a babies butt and it changes as you move and the light shifts. In diffused light, it looks like a solid white body and dark blue bevels. In direct light, the iridescent pearl is muted in shadow and the colors still look solid but the directly lighted parts glow, shine and reflect multicolored lights. The blue bevels look dark until light hits them and then they light up bright and taper off into dark.

It kicks ass, and that is what a Jackson should do!
