  • another WRMG question

    Hi all,

am I correct that the WRMGs are the next best thing to get after the USA select series? (with bolt-on neck, that is)

Is there a quality difference in the wood used for the body?
Is the balance (standing up) the same as in the select-series?
How do they compare to the Professional series?

Would any bolt-on USA neck (e.g. speedneck, DR2-neck) fit if I should replace the standard neck?

    thanks

    I've

I've never played a WRMG, but I did own a Kelly Professional XL, and I loved it. XL necks are just incredible. Real MOP sharkies, nice shape, thin, and bound. What's not to love. Get a Professional XL with a Schaller, and you're already leaps and bounds past the WRMG.

The dimensions of the WR1 neck are the same as the WRMG. They only feel different because one's painted (WR1), the other isn't. Neither balances better than the other (no neck dive). The WR1 is a USA Select, thus Jackson would be pickier over the woods used (little or no impurities). The WR1 also has better pots and switch. The professional series (1990-91) are supposed to be on a par with the USA Select series. But until someone offers to sell me one (subtle hint), I can't tell.

pots and wires and stuff would be replaced, it's mainly wood-stuff I'm concerned about

Slight correction: They are on par with the 1990-91 USA models. The "USA Select" did not start until the late 90s, IIRC, and at that time there was a noticeable change in the USA models from the previous incarnations. In particular, the WR1 was made a 2-hum 25.5" scale, whereas the 90/91 Warriors (Pro and USA) were 24.75" scale with the 3 slanted singles.

          I haven't tried a WR1, so I can't attest to the neck backshape vs a WR Pro's backshape.

But my WRMG balances just as good as my 1990 USA Warrior, and any 25.5" scale 24 fret Jackson neck will fit on it - DK2M, KVX10, DK-1, DK2, etc.

I even put a Fusion neck on one (ebony, binding, MOP fins) and it intonated just fine.

Newc, do you notice a lot of difference in playing and sound quality (besides being a bolt-on)?

Well, my WRMG has EMG HZs in it, a DK2M neck, and 140+ spikes and studs on it, and the Warrior USA has Duncans and is short-scale with a totally different neck profile, so yeah, there's a huge difference in how they play and sound:

I would expect the current WR-1 to play and sound better than a WRMG as well, but that doesn't mean the WRMG sucks.

                It's a bolt-on for sure

                thanks for the advice

I should clarify that I find no difference in upper-fret access between bolt-on and neckthrough. I should also add that I'm one of only 10 people in the world for whom this is true

The actual neck backshape (profile) is different for the current bolt-on necks than the older neckthroughs, and even the older (early 90s) bolt-ons, so the feel between them is still going to be radically different, but not unplayable.

Also, "sound quality" is mostly subjective. Some will argue that off-brand/licensed/"designed" pickups sound bad compared to the name-brand stuff. Some do, but this is not a universal truth.
However, the WRMG will have lower-quality pots and hardware than the USA model, but those are easily replaced and can even make "no-name" pickups sound better.

There's really a lot more to consider when comparing imports to USA-made than just sound and playability. Everything can be adjusted and modified to either good or bad.

The bottom line: you cannot go wrong with a Jackson MG or Pro series import.

In other words, just buy the WRMG and be done with it! And don't forget to post pix.

                      hehe, deal

Seems like some modding job will come up.

Will be an WRMG, though, because I prefer a bolt-on neck (love the speedneck on my dinky better than my RR1's neck-through)

I have to admit...the Warrior shape just looks better with slanted pickups and fretboard.

How much does a secondhand WRMG go for? (€, £, $)

edit: I finally made my 100th post here
