Hi guys, i am relatively new to this forum and i have a serious problem. I have two imports - a DK2S and a WRMG. The WRMG is the older model (basswood body, had HZ's but replaced them with 81/85). As far as playability, they are pretty much the same (same neck).
As for the sound.. I really really like the jb in the dk2s (combined with the alder body). It is my main guitar so every amp is set according to that guitar. On the other hand i never really liked the wrmg sound. I hated it with the HZ's. When i replaced them with the 81/85 combo it was bearable BUT a couple of months later i bought the DK2S and almost never touched it again. So, i tried it again recently, and everything sounded like $hit. Cleans had way bass (the 85 in the neck is very woofy and boomy) while played on the bridge (81) they were very sterile. As for the distorted sound, the 81 was kinda fizzy and lacked character. For rhythm it didn't sound good and for leads it was so and so - but still worse than the jb.
Today i swapped the pups - 85 bridge/81 neck - and it sounds a bit better but again the guitar lacks serious character. It is very very dull and flat sounding. Also the bass is there on the 85 but it sounds less open and defined than i like. I tried it with all my amps: marshall 6100lm, lee jackson xls 1000, engl powerball, peavey 6505 and randall warhead X2, along with eq's: furman pq3, pq4, mxr kfk 10band and mxr 6-band. The amps were also boosted were needed with a Bad monkey and a home-made treble booster. But i always came to the same conclusion - i prefer amp distortion to pickup distortion. I even like my washburn wi64dl w/stock pups better than the wrmg! I don't know if it is the pickups or the basswood - maybe their combination. So, do you have any pickups to recommend? I think i would prefer mid-to-high but not very high (like emgs) output pickups with a tight bass response and a full sound with definition that fit well to basswood. Any ideas? Thanks a lot, i am a bit desperate about that guitar
PS. I play all kinds of metal music - heavy, metalcore, thrash. I want it to be a metal guitar but i want to get rid ot that emgs.
PS2. I connected the afterburner that was stock to the 81/85 when i installed it, but i never use it - way fizzy and noisy.
