  • USA and Import Star

So a buddy of mine has an 80's/90's Import Charvel Star.

The thing looks wicked, matte white with a solid orange lightning bolt across the body/pickguard.

I've been looking around for one, but the only problem is that he hates his. Says it sounds terrible. He plays it for about 60 seconds every show just to break it out because it's badass.

So I was wondering, is there any quality difference between the USA Stars and the imports? Are the newer ones better? Do any of you guys also have Import Stars that you can comment on?

    Thanks.

Saw your post on HC about this too.
Like any other guitar, there are good and bad ones. New and Old.
You have any pics of his? Could be that it needs pups or he got a dog. It happens with every manufacturer sometimes. Bad piece of wood, sounds dead.??

What sort of person keeps a guitar they hate, and even plays it at a show?
If he hates it so much why hasn't he sold it, or at the very least replaced the pickups? I'm pretty sure a set of Duncan Blackouts would sort the thing out.

          And welcome!

I had one of those and wish I had it back

It's easy to spot - it should eb the only one with 3 knobs

Can't say it sounded bad. The pickups were unknown but they rocked as far as I was concerned.

Definitely made in India or Indonesia, though. I wanna say India. I think the body was Cedro, which is close to Cedar. I had fairly large slivers when I drilled the third hole, and the texture and color reminded me of Cedar.

Anyhoo, if dude's truly sick of his and wants to get rid of it, I might have trade bait.

Nah, he's hanging on to it just as a showpiece. He uses a Les Paul for most of the show anyway, and then for the final song he'll bring out the Star.

And yeah, he basically has the same, 3 knobs, etc. If you like the sound, awesome.

How much do used Stars go for these days? I'd probably buy the Import but wouldn't say no to an American made one either.

                Alright, so I'm totally bumping.

Seriously, you crazy Charvel owners, have any of you seen Stars selling these days, and for what? My friend got his off of ebay, but all that's on at the moment are retardedly priced shop guitars. I want to try and get a general price estimate so I can look into things further.

And yeah, I'm totally looking for the Lightning Star, it's just gotta be.
