PUP for Soloist Pro? What Screams?

If I don't care for the bridge pup in this 90 pro, what should I replace the bridge pup with? I am an 80's metal player and use to swear by the SD custom distortion. I may not want to mess with the single coils or the electronics, so whats a perfect drop in for a killer sound with a Mesa amp?

Be more specific on what you don't like with the current pickup.

There is no SD custom distortion. There's the Custom (4 of them) and the Duncan Distortion.

I'm guessing you meant the Custom with a ceramic magnet SH5. I'd say if you liked this, you would like a Gibson 500T, a Super Distortion, or any similar 15K pickup with a ceramic magnet. It is a good combination.

Might want to go to the Seymour Duncan forums and ask there.

Most Duncan pickups have a sticker on the back. If you still have the pickup, posting a pic or saying what the sticker on the back says can help ID it.

DDJ or DDL = Duncan Distortion
DCJ or DCL = Duncan Custom

It went with the ESP Phoenix I traded. I will listen to the pup that is in the Pro and then decide, but I am pretty sure I will elect to change it. Just not sure what to put in the bridge with the active electronics that are in this guitar. Ideas? Passive?

Sorry I missed this. Have not heard the existing as I do not have the guitar for another week. I actually like the sound of the EMG-HZ that are in some of the Dinkys, think it is a P-90.

Have this in my GL ESP LTG (so the seller told me) and it sounds ok, but the EMG sounds better IMHO. Thanks!

Well I will add my $.02, while the stock pickups are not too bad, but if the bridge pickup is the same as the Rhoads pro, then definitely change it. I noticed both pickup have way too much bass and mid as well as not enough treble.. I am having my pickups changed to emg 81s... So I would recommend changing it out myself..

I have a Duncan Custom in my yellow Soloist Pro, and it screams. I've had the Duncan Distortion in other Soloists with good results, also.

EMGs are the easier install, simply because you can replace the entire electronics package with the controls that EMG provides. Personally, I've never been a big fan of the Jackson JE-1200 active circuit that's in your guitar, and I've removed it in every Jackson and Charvel I've had from that era. However, it's not a big deal to replace the pickups with Duncans if you want to keep the JE-1200; it only becomes an issue if you want to do a clean install with passive circuitry.
