I was just coming back from Wacken last Tuesday, when I found a letter from the customs in the mailbox. A package from Japan was waiting for me at Paris airport ...
Well, guess what was inside
Serial number : 051194
Model : Jackson Stars RR Semi-custom
Year : 2005
Specs
First impressions :
The sound is pretty good. I didn't expected much from an active pickup after the deception I had with the blackouts, but actually the ash/EMG combination is pretty decent! I doesn't have the mediums and sweet sound of my other Jackson Stars (alder/J-80C+JE-1000), but it sounds very clear, with just as much gain as it needs (unlike the blackouts in my Spitz that have waaaay too much gain).
The playability is that of a high-end Jackson Stars : perfect! It is tuned in drop C at the moment and I'm gonna leave it like that for a little while as the strings are new and it has been perfectly set up for this tuning. Ash feels heavier that alder, but still very reasonable. It can be played while standing up without any problem. The nut is narrower than on my other RRs (41.6 mm instead of 43 mm IIRC). You can feel it when you switch from one to the other, but it doesn't affect the playing at all, you get used to it instantly.
The finition is very similar to full custom, except for the flame maple top that has much more details on my full custom Jackson Stars. But since this one has a darker finish, it doesn't really matter, you don't see the top that much.
