Charvel San Dimas Bass Serial 2204

Hi folks, thought I'd upload some pics of my pretty beat up Charvel San Dimas bass. This lady has seen better days, but still sounds and plays great.

Serial is 2204 - neck pocket has date "5/16/83" and initial "JR" - pencil also has "5/16" - and there is a name in blue biro (which I have blurred). Not sure why this is there - customer name maybe?

Body, hardware and electrics seem to be all original - altho the body has chips out of the paintwork and, as you can see, the control nobs and bridge are pretty grotty! The neck however is a replacement - no skunk stripe - not sure what happened to the original.

I hope to get it restored to its original glory someday - the original finish is like a really really dark brown/purple - starting with cleaning the control knobs. Anyone got any advice on where to start with these?

#2204 plate probably came off of the guitar the neck is from or something else. and I could s.w.e.a.r I saw that thing somewhere on ebay or another site for sale not too long ago.

Hi, thanks for the quick reply. I posted pic on the usacharvels site a couple of years back - maybe you saw them there? I asked if anyone thought the body and hardware was original and what the possible value was. The thought was that it looked like it might have been authentic.

The neck seems to be pretty cheap - whereas the body (which weights a tonne!) and hardware, EMG's, etc, look to be the real deal.

Be nice if there was a work order or something for the 2204 serial number, to see if the body is real.

Not looking to sell (if indeed it was worth anything) as it's the only bass I own (being a gtr player) - but looking for some advice on cleaning the thing up, esp the crud on the volume and tone controls. It's nearly bright green!

Edited to say: they guy who sold me it a few years back (£150) just sold it as "an old Charvel Bass", and wasn't trying to pass it off as an original. He didn't even mention the neck plate or date in the neck pocket. Said he bought it in New York "a good few years back".

No no no... your dates are wrong.
The plate is a Charvel plate, not a Jackson plate.

Charvel serial numbers 1725-2938 were made in 1983.

2204 is from 1983.

oh ya typing on my android you tend to "skim" things ...hahaha
heavy huh? looks like the same body shape as my model2 (poplar) would make it heavy as mine are. hardware and knob placement are 100% correct.

2204 is an explorer neck plate. Which is also indicated by the hole in the center. And an 83 body was likely to have a pointy head on it.

wow this is old so since you tossed it to the top, why would you think that 2204 was used on an explorer body and not something else?
but on the other hand maybe that is the plate from my explorer body since I didn't get one with it -- hmmm..

The hole could have been added later by one of the owners. 1983 was a long time ago.

that hole looks like someone used a screwdriver as a wood chisel. One of the more important reasons I HATE the TR adj. at the bottom of a neck.

Brass polish and a tooth brush on the knobs should do it.Just take it slow you don't want them all shiny and new looking.

BTW, around the same timeframe that guy posted in TalkBass, we told him the same shit, his body was butchered, blah, blah...and he has not posted since over there either.
