stewMac does sell the new P-selects for 20 something dollars, and if the new ones sound like the old ones and I get crazy, I'm gonna replace another one of the basses pups with one soon.

Are the pots and the tone cap the same as on other basses or were they changed ? They can have alot to do with the response from the pup.

the tone cap was replaced with one of those silver "barrel" caps. I didn't look at the value yet, and so was the volume pot. It is a 250k and the tone is a 500k. I have a complete set of pots and stuff from my 1b when it came with a EMG the previous owner who gave me all the OEM stuff, so I do have spare parts. I probably will never gig this one, so it technically could stay AS-IS, but it was too cheap to pass up the opportunity to mess with....

That Soundgear is one of the first models--around 89-91 or something like that (not as hot with my SR timeline placement as I am with my Roadstars), so that narrows it down a little bit. I think at that point, it was probably still made in Japan. Early-mid 90s replacements, perhaps? The knobs on that thing don't look original.

Saunders brand bass neck made in the early 80's by Charvel Manufacturing

Rest of the story : At this period of time Charvel was manufacturing components and even full instruments for other brands including BC Rich and the early Ernie Ball era Music Man basses (yes, they made necks and bodies for them as well). This was made in that same timeframe and former Charvel employee Henry Boyle recalled the staff had a funny, but somewhat vulgar name for these around the shop. I know some will question if this is a real Charvel product. It is indeed. I have many NOS Saunders branded necks in tubes from Charvel I opened for the first time since they left Charvel and they are identical in every way. Besides that, Jim never went far and didn't even use up the stock he bought from Charvel. It was a business venture that never went anywhere.

ha maybe at a show this summer I'll get costumed up, do a "KISS" bass toss with some gunpowder a detonator in the thing, and watch it blow up. If I catch it, at least the neck will still be in one piece
naw, I actually wanted this bass to be a project, not for destroying, but for experience of a DIY project, for a repaint, re rout and fill for DC's and not a P/J pickup, re re re....

my curiosity factor Bob, is really not caring "when" they were made I guess, but was the ohmage or windings changed from the older ones "designed for EMG" to the newer ones that are EMG on the website?...that's kinda what I am looking for as the pursuit of "select" tone goes, cause I like this one, if the new ones are identical inside, I'll buy a new one.

I will email EMG to find out exactly what is inside, and see what they say....
