  • SL1 with FR/SpeedLoader

I came across a quite strange SL1 while browsing the zzounds web site. The item shows as a regular transparent red SL1, but if you choose the high-res image there a number of interesting details:

The SL1 Soloist has serious attitude and tone to match, thanks to a super-fast hard rock maple neck, three Seymour Duncan pickups and an original Floyd Rose.

    * there are no regular tuners
    * it seems to use a FR speedloader system
    * has the custom shop logo in the truss rod cover

Is this a normal item or they just mismatched the trans-red image? Are speedloaders loaded SL1 common?

    Thanks

No, they're not. I've had dealings with that speedloader with NJ Series BC Rich guitars, and they suck. Go with a regular SL1 and you'll be fine.

Those speedloaders scare me. How would you adjust it for different tunings and string gauge?
      It's pronounced soops

you adjust them via an allen wrench. its a small hole on each saddle - ladjusting it ets you change the range of the fine tuners.

so between that, and the spring claw on back, you can accomodate any string gauge (provided they are the special speedloader strings)

this pic doesnt show the holes, but since there isn't much out there on the internet by way of decent photos, here's a pic of a speedloader bridge. sold the guitar but i will say the bridge is not a piece of crap. when adjusted properly it was very very stable.

Well, I'm going to have to say that I think there is about a zero percent chance that is the actual guitar you would receive if you ordered the Trans Red SL1 from zzounds because that's a Custom Shop guitar and it would be a steal for that price. It should be about an extra grand or two.

So, I think they just messed the picture up.

The custom shop made 2 of these about 4 or 5 years ago for the NAMM show, mine and a red one. This was coordinated/requested by Floyd Rose to display the Speedloader. These both use the good version of the trem, not the import one as used on the BC Rich imports (although I have one of those too and it works well).

My SL1 plays as good/stays in tune/sounds as good as any of my other soloists with an OFR, and it balances better without the weight of the tuners.

I agree that the link by ZZounds is a mistake.

The first pic was on the Floyd Rose website for a while. You can tell its mine by the pattern in the flame, but the different cameras used makes the color look different, in person its more like the first pic:

I liked the concept of the SL, but, it didn't take off at all.
Floyd doesn't fail often, but, this was one of them I guess.

Strange that they didn't take off. I love them and they are very well made. I would replace all my OFR's with SL's if I could afford to do it. Makes for a lighter guitar as well.
