  • Difference in finish on Au Natural PC1s

Hey guys, I've been keeping an eye out for a nice PC1 in Au NAtural finish for quite a while. I'm not in any rush, but if the right deal came along I may be forced to grab it Anyway, for those who have seen a lot of examples, would you say the finish on the Au Natural is pretty consistent or are there some that just don't have that "pop" that you expect on the PC1? I've come across a few here and there that look uninspiring in the photos but it may just be that the owner can't take a good picture. A couple of the more recent ones I was checking out were newer strat head models. Do you find much difference in the Natural finish over the years like a couple of the other colors? Thanks a bunch for the help!

Thanks greg. I have seen that, though there isn't anywhere near me that carries them so I haven't seen one in person. How do you think the finish compares to the others in person? Is the finish more work to keep up not having a clear coat or just different? Sorry if these are dumb questions but it's hard not being able to hold the guitar in your own hands first. I also like the chlorine and root beer finishes, but there's something about the Natural...

The Au Natural is not a gloss finish at all. It is a very nice oil finish. Due to its lack of shine it's going to photograph very differently than the other finishes. It's actually way less work to keep up than a gloss finish. I had an Au Natural and I loved the way the finish felt. And the finishes are very consistent. I had an old one and just saw a brand new one in Piney's store and it was all the same.

As long as an oil finished guitar doesn't bother you don't worry about the pics and grab one when you can. You won't be disappointed!

I'll agree w/ Bryan here regarding the Au Natural finish. It's much easier to maintain than a glossy finish. No fingerprints and such to mar the finish. It's really a beautiful finish, and I've grown to like it more than the old Chlorine finish that 1st caught my eye years ago. When I first got my Au Natural, it was a compromise because even in the used market I could not afford what the chlorines were going for back then (about 4 -5 years ago I think). When I look at it now, I can't imagine wanting anything else. Well, except maybe a second one! I posted a pic in another thread that includes my PC-1 here:

I will say this though. I have found that the more recent ones don't seem to have as consistantly nice tops as I used to see. Perhaps it is a photography issue, but it seems that the quilts on many of the newer PC-1's aren't as consistantly nice as they used to be. However, I am sure that you can find a good one if you look hard enough. Good luck.

You're right on the quilts. They aren't quite as figured as they used to be on a consistent basis. But the finish hasn't changed.

Thanks guys, good to hear that the Natural is a great finish. I don't mind either headstock, so I guess I'll see what comes along. I'll keep you posted if I ever find the one...
