  • Transparent Purple on a Kelly?

    Hey guys,
I´ve been wondering how much it would cost me to get a regular Kelly Ke2, but with transparent purple on both body and headstock.
I´m not talking about the purple daze thing, but a real purple without these "waves" in it (or is this because of the wood?)

Is there a way around the Custom Shop? I don´t really want to pay a grand more just for that color and due to the fact that I live in
Germany the guitar already is freakin' expensive.

Get a KE2 and get it refinished by some luthier.. IMO that is the cheapest option..

I don't think it is full custom shop price just for a finish change. It still goes through the custom shop, but I think it's just an upcharge for the finish difference.

That's they way they had proposed a year or two ago; not sure if it is still in effect.

you will have to get in touch with a dealer and request it over him.
I doubt jackson will deal with you directly at all.

since jackson is part of the FMIC any store that is a licenced fender-dealer will be able to get that done for you.

if this is what you speak of as "waves":

it is indeed an effect of the wood. "quilted maple top" is what it's called.
a good painter could MAYBE get you close by faking it, but for the real deal you'd have to get such a top applied to the body and headstock.

I could recommend this kraushaar dude from aachen.
Anfertigung, Restauration und Reparatur elektrischer und akustischer Gitarren und Bässe sowie Zupfinstrumente aller Art. CITES-Sachverständiger gem. § 51 Abs. 1 Bundesnaturschutzgesetz

it is a couple of kms, but he does a decent job (he will take care of all the work steps himself) is a really nice guy and has fair prices.
he builds guitars himself (which are really great tested in gitarre&bass for example) and a few of my friends have dealt with him and were REALLY satisfied. you should send him an email and ask what he'd take for stripping a guitar, applying a maple top and refinish the whole thing.
with a poject like that you should take care to find someone you trust in.
but I guess if you get a second hand beater (scratched and stuff) KE2 in good playing condition you should be way cheaper that way than compared to ordering a new customshop. (don't forget the huge amount of taxes and fees you have to pay when ordering from the US.)
but getting a quote for your guitar won't hurt too of course.

please be sure to keep us updated if you get this project rolling!

Didn't he say he wanted it without the waves?
As far as I'm concerned he can stay with Dean and play his dots+fins KV copies, and whatever that aborted fetus he "designed". More like "I saw it in my puke". -Newc

I think that got subsequently "clarified" to mean only hardware color or pickup changes. I don't think finish changes apply, so possibly full custom shop pricing for this.

IMHO, any trans finish without a flamed or quilt maple top will look butt ugly on a standard neck-through. Imagine this body in trans purple:

No thanks. To each his own, though.

thx guys! Yeah, you´re right a quilted maple top probably would be nicer.....I´ll have to talk to a Fender authorized dealer I guess.

(Why on earth isn´t there a jackson custom shop in germany^^)

you could also go with a flamed top.

                    there's many nice possibilities...

PS: I went to a little workshop with Jeff Waters (Annihilator) yesterday and at the end he went through the rows because he had one last dvd to give away. When he was next to me I was like "I´ll take it" and he looked and me and said "you´re wearing a Jackson shirt I can´t give you that." (he was endorsing ESP) and he gave it to the guy in front of me because he had an Annihilator T-Shirt......damn^^

You should have told him: "I may listen to your music but I play the best----->JACKSON!"
