Thanks Vector! I was really just wondering if Jackson has done/can do this... This discussion about if it produces greater sustain was unintentional.

Can Jackson make guitars with Humbuckers mounted in-body?

Yes, Jackson has done it on a few guitars in the past. The Dinky Reverse models in the mid '90s and the Dinky HX come to mind. If you want a Custom Shop model like that, they'll do it.
Here's my '94 Dinky HX.

Funny this whole time I thought pickups were potted in wax and or epoxy to protect against hum and interference. So I still don't get why we still build necks and bodies out of wood. You'd think metal and rubber guitars would have less microphonics and better??? sound??? That's IT!!!! I'm done with all this strings wood and pickup BS. I'm going full MIDI.

direct mount will sound differnt to using pickup rings... might not be noticeable but it will make a difference
think of it like making a car lighter for better race performance..
they strip the car completely.. such as removing the mat from the floor.. just removing the mat would make next to no difference, but when combined with removing everything else such as seats and whatnot.. it all adds up
so really my point is, there is not alot of point direct mounting to change your tone, unless you're prepared to make further efforts to compliment doing so
personally i mount my pickups in the neck.. :/

Hey, really, most of the direct-mount jobs I have seen from Charvel/Jackson have rubber (vibration dampening) under the pickup legs and/or foam (vibration dampener) under the pickup itself so really, mounting a pickup firmly with screws and springs and a fairly rigid plastic or metal ring should transfer vibration better than a soft rubber mount. :dunno:

I've posted this before but it's been a while so here we go:
Back in '98-'99, a friend and myself did a comparison of this issue after reading an interview with EVH where he claimed it made a big difference in tone...essentially saying that the pickup was able to read more of a guitar body's resonance. We used a Strat style "parts-o-caster" and tried several different humbuckers (JB, Custom, '57 Classic, H2+, Pearly Gates, and a Dimarzio PAF IIRC). We then listened to and recorded each pickup playing chords and solos through a Matchless Chieftain, '72 Marshall JMP, '65 Pro Reverb, Vox AC30 reissue, and a 5150/4x12. We heard absolutely NO DIFFERENCE either live or when listening back to the recording. I recall being a bit bummed as I was hoping to gain that elusive "tonal edge"
IMO based on pickup theory and actual experimentation, its an aesthetic thing only.

check page 5 of the archtop thread if you want to see some direct mounted humbuckers, on my guitar, it sounds different to my ears than my other jacksons that I own with ring mounted pups. I feel that you do get more of the resonnance and character of the wood coming through, a bit darker fuller sound.
your mileage may vary....

Nobody ever bothered to take the 'ears' off the pups, remove 2 screws (diagonal) from the baseplate and mount them from the back (trem cavity) using longer screws ?
