  • How low can you get your action on your USA JAckson?

Please list your USA model and how low you can get the action without buzz. Thanks.

Very dependent on a lot of factors like a person's playing attack, string gauge, auditory sensitivity to "buzz", amount of gain used, etc. With that said, I setup most guitars (including my USA Jacksons) with these specs:

    4/64" low E
    3.5/64" high E
Both of those are measured open at the 12th fret.

I generally set the relief somewhere between .004" to .010" measured on the D string at the fret with the largest gap.

I could set my action lower, but I don't because it actually makes playing more difficult for my technique and it causes more buzzing than I like. But another person may play softer and be able to play my guitars at 2/64" action.

Mine's at -4/64ths, the strings actually go below the frets! No buzz. Jacksons are that good.

        too true.

Is it no buzz no matter how hard you hit the strings, or no buzz dependent on how lightly you play? And is it plugged or unplugged? I tend to have some acceptable level of buzz playing unplugged, but you never hear it through the amp

mine too! Of course, I can only hear EADGBE at the 24th fret no matter what I play, but no buzz whatsoever!!

I like what I believe would be considered medium action as I pick kinda heavy. Most of my guitars the strings are approximately .8 to 1mm from the top of the 12th fret. My RR1T has my lowest action at around .7mm because it can pull off that low with little or no buzz even played hard. My model 5 charvel is in that ballpark too since getting a level while it was at Mike Learn's shop.

In my world 0,8-1,0mm at the 12th is really low.
I tend to aim at around 1,5mm at the 12th to start with and then adjust the relief and the action according to what the guitar in question can take with my picking style.
I usually end up between 1,3-1,7mm at the 12th with a relief between 0,1-0,3mm if the guitar is in fairly good shape.
On most of my guitars I can go lower but the sensitivity to temp and moisture usually results in me doing more tweaking than playing...

1.0 mm at the 17th fret with the 1st fret capo'd on the treble side. 1.2 mm on the bass side, .005 relief.

Low enough that I can Legato-pick and hammer-on scalar runs, rather than doing all that extra picking of each note, but not so low that bends grind out.

However, just for giggles, I did set one up for absolutely-no-bending-allowed (not even mild vibrato), and while it was shit-your-pants-easy to fret, there's really not much you can do with that setup but meedly-wanking.
You can do a fuck-ton of it, but that's about it. You can do trem-dives, of course, but the moment the trem goes backwards, the whole thing goes dead quiet.

for what its worth im repping 2mm on the 24th and 12th (measured the er little "e" one...) - but this is with floyd, so if i go any lower, i cant get and decent animal moves with the floyd dives and vibratos.

Yet intriguingly ( or not!) on my little JSKV (tuno bridge) iv got .8mm on 12/24th (again on the little e..) and although there is a bit of buzz unplugged or - dare i say it akoustikly - its sweet as amped up - and this is a definate bridge related issue - so surely on tuno string though models we should be seeing super low but playable action height?

I have my action at just under the width of a dime (at12th fret) on my CS KV2. Same with both my PRSi.

My 97 Soloist is my best by far. .9 mm at the 12th fret treble side and 1.1 mm 12 fret bass side. .03 relief. I play extremely lightly and as such I never hear any buzz clean or distorted. I am sure if you really whacked the strings it would sound horrible.

I put the top of the base plate of the Floyd level with the top of the body. Good enough for me.

I can easily set mine lower than I like, and not have fret buzz....

I got mine so low it was under my frets!

                            I keed I keed.

But they're all correct. You can get the action as low as you can tolerate it basically. They are really that good.

I find all of my guitars (including my '85 Soloist) play and sound better with higher action. I set it at 1/16th on the high E (12th fret) and 5/64ths low E.
