  • Jackson RR1T and Pickups?

Hey Guys. I just picked up a Jackson RR1T and the guy before me had EMG's in it, 81/60's. I usually always use EMG's but I wire them with the 18 volt mod. This RR1T has very little space in the cavity and I a cannot fit the second battery to try the 18 volt mod to see if it improves the tone to my liking.

Do any of you guys have EMG's with the 18 volt mod in an RR1? How did you fit the second battery? I don't want to route out the cavity.

Does anyone have an EMG 81 in the bridge and like it in an RR1?

What other pick ups are known to pair up good with the RR1's?

This is my first RR1, and first alder body guitar. I have a King V that's Basswood (KVX10) and had a KV2T that was mahogany. My KVX10 is much brighter in a good way.

I find my RR1 sounds a little dead, or dull maybe it's the sterle sound that the EMG's are known for...

I play old 80's type thrash, with a lot of mids in standard tuning...

    Any suggestions guys?

    Thanks.

Make yourself an 18V adapter and dangle the 2nd battery out of the cavity temporarily so you can test if you like it or not.
If you like it, maybe you could install a dual 9V battery compartment?

EMGs are sterile as you mentioned, and the 18V mod does open them up some, but I found I like the Seymour Duncan Livewires MUCH more.
Although the stale sound of EMGs should be perfect for the 80s thrash sound...just not so much for other stuff...

        Thanks guys.

Funny, I was thinking of trying the 18 volt with the batteries dangling...I may as well, I already have the adapter set up for 18 volts.

Duncan Distortions are the only Duncan's I've ever liked, I used them briefly in an SG. I 've tried the Custom, Distortion, JB, Jazz, Dimebucker & liked the Distortion best. I was kinda thinkin of trying a Distortion again or even an Invader.

try some Bill lawrence XL500L ones, i had them on my RR1 1995 and sounded much better than my 1989 RR1 EMG custom shop nor the 2003 RR1 with seymour tb2 and sh2, especially if you need old school thrash sound, slayer used them at their best period as well

Really? I had an L500XL in an ML that I had, it was mahogany with a maple laminate top, it was a made in korea model. It sounded too flubby, I hated them, but it was the best sounding pickup for lead.

I wonder if it was the ML, it being just a made in Korea model...

I tried the bill larence on many guitars even to a gibson custom and didnt sound right BUT on the RR1 and an Sl1 from 1989 i have they sound amazing( also to a bc rich gunslinger from 1987 with alder body), i suggest you try those, Jackson used them as factory pick ups to the early 90's soloist and RR1 models , it was not the bill and becky ones though. I had the same problem with 18v mode on my RR1 which instead of 3 had 2 pots for extra spacing and still couldnt fit. The only solution that had them tightly fit it was to put the battery naked ( without extra protective foam as ussual) inside the cavity. Do you think having the battery naked in the cavity might eventually cause a problem with the electrics?

I've had the battery naked and cause problems, that happened ones. Best thing to do there is wrap the entire battery in electrical tape so nothing is exposed. The tape won't take up any space so you'll be good, will protect better than the foam too!

About the L550XL, the one I had was a Bill and Becky L500XL, are you saying the other ones are better/the one your referring to? DO you find the L500XL has bite to it, I felt like there was no depth or range in my palm muting in comparison to my King V with EMG's at 18 volts.

If the EMG's are hooked up with the quick connects it would be pretty easy (plug n play) to drop in Duncan Blackouts...

I played my almost RR1 with the Kerry King set, and I had EMGs (81/60) on my Explorer. I think they sound same on every guitar, or -better- every guitar sounds the same with EMGs on it. That's my opinion, I'm going to put on a JB and a '59, i love passive pickups. I'd also like to try a Super Distortion in the bridge position and a P.A.F 36th Anniversary in the neck

yes i am reffering to the other ones that Jackson USA used, i also tried the bill and becky and was too chunky on the soloist, this one sounded more balanced just dont forget to reverse it. Thnx for the tip on the batteries i will try it:

anks for the pics. No prob, yeah you'll end up with loads of room once you get the electrical tape on there instead of the foam.

I'm jealous lol, I actually don't use my 3rd pot, I just wire the EMG's with two master volumes, one for each pickup and no tone, so the 3rd pot is just there for show. I wonder if I can mess with the pot on the reverse side, where it sits in the cavity and save some space to squeeze a battery in behind the 3rd pot that I'm not using?

Yeah I found the Bill & Becky's to sound chunky that's exactly what I didn't like, I hated the way they felt when I played rhythm. How come your pickups don't have Bill Lawrence written on the front of the pickup? I though the Bill & Becky's didn't have the Bill Lawrence written and the "other" ones did have Bill Lawrence written. That;s kinda how I distinguish the two, but I know for sure the ones I had were Bill & Becky ones, the guy I bough them from specifically told me they were, he was an authorized dealer for them,. And yeah I did reverse them.

Are these the ones I should get: http://www.ebay.com/itm/BILL-LAWRENC...item5637465ea8

Yeah I hear ya about EMG's. But honestly, I have EMG's in a Les Paul (Mahogany) and then in a King V (basswood) and then in my RR! (alder) and the Les Paul and RR1 sound very similar and the King V sounds the best, it's basswood, I love the brightness. Both the Les Paul and King V have the 18 volt mod, the RR1 doesn't (yet! lol).

I have 1 volume 1 tone on the RR1 to save battery space:

About Bill Lawrence, yes these are the one, they later had Bill Lawrence USA stamped on them, earlier models didnt. Some people say they have differances so maybe you should try an earlier version of them: http://www.ebay.com/itm/BILL-LAWRENC...item1e66afc993
