Something doesn't seem right. Are you sure your cable is pushed in the jack all the way? EMG jacks are tight and sometimes you need more than one click to make sure it's in all the way and making the proper connection.
I'm pretty sure everything's wired OK and the jack is a functional one, but I'll double-check by swapping the X's for regular EMGs off my Eclipse. I've had a set of X's before (on four different guitars) and that strange feel - like having a noise-gate on somewhere in the setup - is still present. The pickups are more responsive now after I resorted back to traditional soldering, but not quite as responsive as the regular EMGs. The talk on another forum says the X series is really nothing much more than a couple of resistors added to the decades old EMG preamp design, to bring the gain down for about 6dB. It'd be interesting to know if that's all there is to it.

Hmm, maybe the X series is like that, but I've never tried them. I did get that similar weird sound when I got my first guitar with the regular 81/85 setup years ago, and someone on another forum tipped me off about the cable needing to be pushed more into the jack, and they were right.
I feel my soul go cold... only the dead are smiling.
Up until recently, I had SD Distortion in the Bridge and Jazz in the necks of all of my H/H guitars.
I put the stock SD back in my two soloists.
My charvel model 5 has the stocks and they are terrible. Oversight on my part, I was going to change them out for the SD's I took out of one of my soloists, but sold the pickups without thinking.
my 89 strat has EMG SAs
my 95 strat has distortion in the bridge and a lil 59 in the neck.
I just picked up one of those SLSXMG things and it has an 81/85 combo I think.
Hi!
I think i 'll also put EMG 81/SA/SA to my '87 strat..Or BKP holydiver/the sinner/the sinner
I actually have J50/J100/J100 on this strat but i'm not very very happy of them
