As for the plate #'s, I believe they're spot on for Jacksons with Jackson plates, but there are a number of Jacksons with Charvel plates that were clearly built in Glendora. With the way parts on a few Charvel plated Jacksons, all the remaining parts in Glendora were cobbled together and most of them labeled as Jacksons using up the last of the Charvel plates. The fact that there weren't a whole lot of high numbered and blank Charvel plates on the scene in the late 80's and early 90's was probably because they didn't have many around by the time they were moved in at the new Ontario plant.
I'm willing to assume that they already had thousands of Jackson plates before the move... at the Glendora plant they were probably stacked correctly but by the time they got to the Ontario plant the boxes were restacked wrong, or possibly dropped and mixed up or a combination. I don't see why they would just grab random plates unless they didn't have much choice.
As for trying to date a body by which route they used, you can't. It can help identify, but you need to take into consideration everything else about the guitar. In this case the date on the body, the plate and the headstock logo all point to not being SD. You could still order the small control cavity if you wanted after the move. And whomever thinks that's a SD... not that SD/Ontario means anything, it doesn't, the body is clearly dated. It's an Ontario guitar.
EDIT: BTW, many people who ordered SD Charvels near the end were actually shipped Ontario Jacksons in the configuration they originally ordered.Last edited by xenophobe; 11-22-2011, 01:46 PM.The 2nd Amendment: America's Original Homeland Defense.

There are some usa san dimas that don't even have usa on them. So anything is possible, but, that being said the "R" would mean NOT san dimas (no way, no how).I also would not rule out fake headstock logo's.But thats another deal, this guitar is not a fake and thats what this thread was about "your" strat, that even you know it's not a san dimas.I know the old saying that the value of an opinion is generally inversely proportional to the strength with which it is held.

And as for specific particulars, like I mentioned... You cannot really count on much consistency with early Charvel, Glendora/Ontario transition guitars, Charvel/Jackson imports, as well as custom shop guitars unless you're looking at particular or generic models they've made.
If you want logo information, Jim Shine had a decent site with a lot of pictures... dunno if he's still around though.
Oh, and I dunno if I remember this correctly, but TM usually appeared on decals. R was on later silkscreened. You can find both on transitional guitars from either Glendora or Ontario.Last edited by xenophobe; 11-23-2011, 10:03 AM.The 2nd Amendment: America's Original Homeland Defense.

the guitar looks incredible, love that finish
and all hardware, logos and paint say san dimas .... not to mention neck cavity date
i wish we could get a hold of bob smith to clarify the whole issue once and for all
he built my guitar plate # 5115 dated 6/86.... all san dimas hardware ,then lets remember the 50 pawn shop
san dimas/ontario find from a month ago that was built a week earlier than mine with the same TM logo tuners,hs and dimas control route.“But does it help with the blues rock chatter?"-Hellbat

Of course not much is really known... the most important question, to me, would be if at any point both shops were concurrently in operation... either in whole or in part. The 2nd Amendment: America's Original Homeland Defense.

Back when the gallery existed, I seem to recall many 1100-1505 plated bolt ons with "R" logos. WTF happened to the gallery anyway?
But yeah, I like the guitar!
One more question: Does it have the plastic headstock cap or is it painted? Looks like it's capped to me, which is also very san-dimasesque!Last edited by Bert; 11-26-2011, 05:48 PM.
