Ontario Robin's Egg Blue Strat 2362

This baby arrived last week and I just finished getting it all cleaned up. It is a 1987 with matching numbers and appears to be all original except for the EMG's. The condition is pretty darn good and the price was right. At first I thought the board might be ebony, but it looks to be a really dark rosewood. The color in the pics is about right. It is definitely the darkest rosewood I've seen. It is possible it was darkened, I guess...how would I tell?

And you sure about eh color name? I had a very similar guitar, it was an 87' ebony but a single hum and was listed as Baby Blue on the hang tag.

Thanks, yeah it is a bit of a head-scratcher. There is a slight pitting to the grain on the fingerboard and a slight reddishness like you see with rosewood, and the seller listed it as rosewood as well. From three feet away it looks like ebony.

In the trem cavity it says Robin's Egg Blue!

I'm getting it set up a bit better, and it's a nice player. This board is messing with my head though, the feel is ebony-ish. Here's an indoor shot of it with a lot of light. Note the pits that go with the grain that you can barely see there at the 7th fret, almost like tiny razor slits. There are also dark streaks through the board. The pits became less pronounced after I oiled the board, and almost became invisible (the board was bone-dry when it arrived). I'd love for some expert opinions.

My amateur opinion is it's probably a "stripey" chunk of ebony. But who cares it looks killer. It's a super fat slab. As long as it plays good and sounds good, it is good....

I think it's just a nice dark rosewood...but then again, some ebony is very light. The only way to really tell is in person. But that one might have records with Jackson..

Oh my, no no, my threads don't work that way!

So I am back in the ebony camp on this one. I believe the correct term for what I am calling "pits" are "pores". I think this is a light, porous grade of ebony (my other ebony boards have absolutely no pores showing at all).

Thanks! I'm tweaking the setup and playing it. It has an EMG 81 which really chunks. I forgot to check what those singles are, damn.
