I think thats foam around the pup actually. Ive seen that a few times on guitars from back in the day.

And I also say X2N . Reason is on that aria you see mold pin hole beside the blade. Thats not on J0006.

Has the X2N been around since the early 80's though? I thought that was a late 80's design?

Edit : okay I looked it up and it's actually a late 70's pickup! It was introduced in 1979. Learning is fun!

All X2Ns have black rails. Never seen one with a different color...

Hi. I have actually played that guitar, the band that Campbell used to be in, pre-Dio was Sweet Savage. They briefly became Red Alert in the mid to late 80's. Back in 1989 they played in a local bar where I live here in N. Ireland, U.K.
The guitarist, Speedy as he is known, had it with him. He let me play it unplugged. I have never forgot the feel and sheer
quality of that guitar. It was one of those moments that will never come around again. It was great to see it again, I never thought I would. Where did 23 years go? Great thread. Thanks.

Duncan J.B Custom's and Invaders for the "Last In Line" tour. For the "Sacred Heart" album he started using the Charvel pickups "which were a lot like the Duncan's but hotter"

I can't even fathon him taking a back seat to PC..I just saw them on TV, wow PC's live sound is so far in the background(which is probably a good thing)They both had some cool charvel jackson's..But Viv has always favored LP's from what I have read.

OK so the pickup mystery is solved...

Apparently a custom wound pickup made in very small quantities by an Birmingham UK Shop 'Jay Dee Guitars'. This one (not working) came out of Viv's Jackson Les Paul and was replaced at the DRL Shop.

Hmm, interesting. never heard of that pickup before. Thanks for the info Kurt. Is Jay Dee still around and making pickups? Is the same type going back in it or something else?

Roody, I had no clue either...I just noticed this pickup sitting at the back of Dan's workbench today and knew exactly where it came from!! i wasn't aware they had changed one of the pickups out along with the pot whch was also dead.

Anyway, Yes Jay Dee's are still around....check them out here:

I believe they ended up putting a Duncan in the Bridge position before it got shipped back.

                          Hellraiser6502,

Can you carefully try getting a DC reading of one or the other coils?

Might even be worth sending to Jay Dee (or Seymour or DiMarzio or even BKP) and let them carefully reverse engineer it.

It's a shame putting a generic Duncan in. If anything, put an X2N in to try and keep the old vibe going.

Good info there Frosty. Thanks for sharing. Are you saying Vivian was known as Speedy? If so, it's a shame. I want Speedy back!

Sweet Savage was a 2 guitarist band , Viv being one and speedy the other . Metallica did a cover of their tune Killing Time . What Frosty is saying is that Viv must have given/loned the guitar to Speedy as he played it in an Irish Bar in 1989
