  • USA Fusion refinish project

I posted some pics a while back of this alleged USA Fusion that I grabbed cheap off of eBay. This refinish has been a nightmare. From the pickup route unknown filler, to basic refinishing problems. But it's now done, and ready to be assembled.

This thing started out pretty rough, I wasn't sure how it would come out, since this is my first solo guitar refinish. Here are the "before" pics:

Now since I have a background in autobody and basic painting skills, I thought this would a SIMPLE fix. Slap some filler on it, block it out, get her smooth and spray it. YEAH RIGHT.

I started out with a water based laquer. Even though it's very easy to work with, the time involved with the spraying sucked. Two hours between coats, with like 20 coats needed wasn't working. And ruining the finish TWICE made me switch products. I ended up settling for rattle cans and clear. I just wanted it done. Or I was going to smash it in the street.

Anyways, the finish came out pretty good for a novice. Took my time with spraying, especially with wet sanding, and buffing came out smooth as glass. I'm pretty happy with it, and that's all that matters.

I have two more bodies that I am ready to refinish, another Fusion and a DXMG. The next one will be Sea Foam Green. And probably a Pink for my Wife, for those that know the BC Story....

Came out great! I love the bright yellow.

I've done the rattle can job before. I got impatient and it came out OK, not nearly as good as yours. I wanted to smash mine as well. That was years ago so I've mostly forgotten the pain and suffering involved so I'm ready for another

Whatever Lowes sells, lol. I can't remember the brand. But it's just regular ole spray paint, with spray clear.

Looks Great! Was it Krylon or Rustoleum?

lol, I don't know what it was. What's the difference? As long as you take your time, and apply even strokes, cover with clear, take your time gently wet sanding, it will come out great.

I guess I need to get a picture of the damn spray cans, lol

                      Looks great! Congrats!

I've been planning on refinishing my old Yamaha RGX yellow but was recently starting to doubt my colour choice... After seeing this, I'm forging ahead with the original plan! When I'll actually get the time to do it is a whole other matter...

I just painted a guitar body black and add blood splatters. I'm too embarrassed to take pictures of it though... I used Krylon. Your's turned out fantastic though. Great job

                          Nice work!

Every so often I think about attempting something like this. Then, I read about the amount of work involved and weigh that against memories of other DIY projects that I've done. Needless to say, I end up talking myself out of it

If I need a refin, I'm sending it to Mike.

awesome! Saw your subject heading and immediately wondered what colour I would paint my black US Fusion. Yellow was the first colour that came to mind.

And then I open up the thread and lo! that's exactly what you've done. Looks great.
