My friend's guitar that I referred to in my post had a slightly twisted neck, which couldn't be solved with a truss rod adjustment. Think like a very slight twist in the headstock, affecting the first few frets.
We took the guitar to a luthier, who said that birdseye maple can be problematic for necks, due to the grain pattern. We then contacted Jackson to see if we could get it fixed under warranty, and they asked us to return the guitar to the US. To cut a long story short, in the end we decided not to send it, to avoid paying $400 each way in shipping and risking further damage/Turkish customs abuse. I believe to this day, that neck is still a bit twisty.
