USA Custom Select - your thoughts?

The options they're letting you change are woodworking changes. Those are the most evil kind. Even if there isn't a backlog, you're still going to wait 6-9 months.

Now I don't wan to rain on the parade, but back in 2001, it took roughly 8-9 months for my Snakeskin RR select to be built

I know I'm way out of the loop on current USA select build times, how are they gonna cut down on any back log when they'll probably be showered by Custom-selects?

Agree with Nightbat, my SL2H graveyard took 8 months, my Chris Broderick 7 8 months. I doubt it will be under 8 months to get delivered. But the options are great, and I really think it's a good move.

Please tell me the SL2H MAH belong to the list of custom select!

If they offer too many custom select options, almost nobody will be ordering customs, especially for the $1-3k price difference. It's a great idea now, where the CS is supposedly backed up to nearly 1000 orders... when the backlog drops to a couple of hundred, Fender might re-evaluate this.

Although i can understand the logic in this, not everyone who wants a Custom Shop Jackson just wants a Soloist in Absinthe Frost with a maple board and DiMarzios. There are always those who want Death Kellys, Stars, Extreme Warriors, Demons with smaller bodies and exaggerated arches, etc... This whole Custom Select deal keeps the Custom Shop stuff open to more left-field ideas and truly "custom" guitars rather than wasting valuable time and talent on off-the-shelf guitars with a different paintjobs, pickups and minor woodworking changes.

I definitely think Jackson will sell more guitars this way because one of the most common complaints i see on the internets with regards to USA Jacksons is along the lines of "I'd love a USA Jackson, but they don't have it in the colour i want" or "i want it with a reverse headstock" or "i want EMGs" or "i want a matching headstock" but it always ends with "but i'd rather not pay $3000 and wait two years to get something that's so similar to a guitar they already offer off the shelf." Now there are simply no excuses to not order one (apart from $$$) and personally, i'm definitely going to start putting some cash aside to put in an order.

I ask because it looks like you can get the Nebula graphic on the Dk1 but not on anything else? You can get Lightning Sky on RR1 but no other models?

How often does this happen though? Sure, I have two customs on order that couldn't be Select Customs... but most of the "custom shop" guitars you see on ebay or from NGDs aren't that custom at all. Feel free to browse DCGL, Matt's Music, The Music Zoo or wherever. Look at all the Jackson CS guitars out there... how many of them wouldn't fit into the new Select options? Not many of them.

Just spoke to Fender/Jackson on the phone for a bit to get some clarification. They will do a WR1 in ANY of the solid graphic options for the same price as lets say the WR1 Bolted Steel or RR1 Lightning Sky, even the .... eeek! Jenna Jameson graphic lol

Hmmm, I don't see any way to specify 22 vs 24 frets. So would a 24 fret RR have to be full custom, or...?

Full custom, the RR1 is 22 frets.

Damn. I wouldn't really want any other changes. Maybe a reversed headstock, but that's about it.

FYI for anyone else interested: I just got confirmation that non-recessed Floyds are also available on SL1 orders, so that's an option for either of the Soloist models. Seems like that's probably just a typo on the options list.

Mine's getting ordered now!
