  • Anyone ever seen this?

While disassembling J2375 for buffing and detailing I ran across something I have never seen before....single coils with bar magnets glued (?) to the base. These are strong...you can pick up a friggin' screwdriver with'em LOL! No markings of any kind visible - would probably be under the magnet anyway. Black / white leads. I'm not a real single coil guy, so my experience here is limited....so....any insight would be appreciated. Oh BTW, they sound very nice - very SRV-ish. Thanks!

Yeah I've seen several. They are usually on cheap beginner guitars not USA Jacksons. Kinda curious are the slugs alnico like on USA Fenders? I see rust on them and the cheap ceramics are chromed

I have no illusions about these being quality or not....this guitar has had mega-multiple pup swaps in its life. Good news is that a J80 landed in the bridge and I really like that pickup. Wil probably put some J100's in it sometime...but cheap shit or not these sound pretty good Thanks for your input!

Someone may have put magnets on the bottom of them, don't know why, to give them more output or.....idk know why. Maybe someone else can shed some light on it. The tops look like reg alnico slugs. I have a J80 sitting here and have no IDEA what to put it in.

Anyone? Extra magnet = more output? Sounds feasible?

DiMarzio SDS-1's have huge magnets on the bottom.
            No telling what they are.

I know it would cause more string pull, thought windings would create more output. I'm not a pickup expert by any means. If they sound good keep them. SOmetime crap pickups are wound just right and sometimes they aren't even good enough to use on the fridge.

I have one of those. The slugs are not magnetic. I do believe it's a ceramic bar. The pickup came to me with a Jackson cover, but wasn't glued down, and may not have been original. No idea when or where I got it. Found it in a parts box some months ago and removed the magnet.

Thanks Newc. Probably should have dicked around with these a little more...to be 100% certain what was or was not magnetic. Anyway these covers (generic) were loose also - just kinda rest in place. Next string change I'll pay attention .

+1. On this guitar I'd expect a pair of J100's.

Hit me up if you part with those singles. Might have something I can put them in easily (and remove easily if they blow ) and wouldn't mind trying my luck with them, since I'm not a huge SC fan.

Might have a pair of Duncan Designed SC101s from a DK2 I can swap ya for 'em. Lemme check my parts box. Don't think I have any J100s or J200s, but I might.

Newc, when I get around to swappin' them out, I will definitely give you a shout.

Love the J 100's, beefier than a fender single coil.
