  • NGD Chris Broderick Soloist: A few Questions

Just got my Transparent Red Chris Broderick Soloist. It's pretty sweet. A few questions. It came with 3 wrenches but none of them loosen the locking nuts, isn't that kind of weird? I have other wrenches so it's not a big deal but I found that weird. 2nd question, are you supposed to register the guitar with Jackson? I didn't see a card to return? Last question, This is my first guitar with a floyd rose, how do you tune these things and keep them in tune? Thanks.

    First of all...

Are you sure the allen wrenches aren't the right size? That's pretty odd. One should be for the truss rod (the biggest), one for the locking nut screws and bridge string lock bolts and the smallest one is for the saddle bolts.

As for setting up a Floyd Rose, there are plenty of resources on the net if you Google it, but here's a good place to start: http://musicgearsource.blogspot.com/...rom-floyd.html

EDIT: Since this is your first guitar with a Floyd Rose trem, i have to warn you in advance; you WILL get frustrated when trying to change strings and set it up etc. but eventually you'll get the hang of it and you'll learn to appreciate the tuning stability, versatility and general awesomeness it can offer!

It's all about the blues-rock chatter.

Floyds aren't THAT hard to do. Just a matter of being patient an making sure the strings are fully stretched (just like you should do on any guitar) before clamping the lock nut.

      1. Take note of the baseplate of the Floyd in relation to the body and keep that in your mind.

      2. After cutting string balls off (insert joke ), clamp the new strings into the saddles.

      3. Feed strings into tuning pegs. Now here is what I like to do, before winding the tuning peg (and starting with the lowest string), I use the width of two fingers at the bridge end to loop the string over to get it a nice length so you get 2-3 winds on the tuning peg (Hey it looks nice! Sue me ). Get the string wound a full turn on the peg. Repeat for the other strings.

      4. Now remember that thing about the Floyd baseplate/body relationship I mentioned? Push the Floyd down with one hand so it's in that same position and start to tune up the strings keeping the bridge at the same angle. Get them roughly in tune by ear and the bridge should stay approx in the same position when you let go of the bar.

      5. Check fine tuners on the Floyd aren't all the way down or all the way up and start tuning with the tuning pegs. Start with the lowest and work your way through to the highest string. Take note that as you tune, the previous strings you tuned will go flat so you'll have to retune all the strings a few times (lowest to highest again) until it is fully in tune.

      6. When you are happy it's in tune, clamp the lock nuts and fine tune as required. If you've stretched your strings well, you'll hardly have a worry about it going out of tune. Go nuts up and down on the wang bar and some hard bends will sort any string stretching.

      7. Go nuts on the wang bar!

It sounds more complicated than it is and you'll have the technique down pat by your second set of strings!

Congrats on the Broderick too! I'll bet she's a player! And yes, weird about the allen keys?????

THe guitar came with 3 wrenches and none of them fit the bolts on the nuts. Axegrinder, you're very observant, I did buy a used Soloist but only kept it for a few days as it was not in the shape I expected so I'm really counting this as my first.
