NGD- Custom Select Soloist + a question

This soloist came with these taller plastic pickup trim rings whereas my SL2H-V came with the thin low profile metal pickup trim rings. I am just curious why they choose different pickup rings. The SL2H-V has the Seymour Duncan JB/59 and this new soloist has Dimarizio Super Distortion and PAF Pro. It's no big deal I am just curious.





Here are some pictures. Not the greatest pictures but you get the idea of what it looks like. I can't find a single craftsmanship flaw in it and it plays extremely well. Those guys sure do know how to make a nice guitar! I love the way the pickups sound and feel!

Probably just what was on the bench at the time. You can also see that on the white guitar, the rings have the angle rings, as well as the bridge pickup being taller than the neck. If it bothers you, they are extremely inexpensive and easy to swap out.
On another note, with recessed Floyds you usually have to go with the thinner rings due to the strings being closer to the body.
I don't think it really matters much. You would have to probably get Eric Johnson to be able to tell any tonal differences.

Either work, but the angled rings typically go with non-recessed Floyds or TOM bridges to better match the steeper neck angle. And the thinner, flat rings typically go with recessed Floyds and vintage trems. As mentioned, though, an easy and cheap swap out if either bothers you.

Love the the Soloist. Classy matching black & white theme, and dig the oiled neck. Congrats!

As far as the rings, the important thing is how parallel the pickups are to the strings. If the angle is off too much, it can cause one coil of the pickup to be louder than the other.

Looking at the pics, the bridge pups looks to be angled right to be parallel with the strings, but there appears to be an angle difference on the neck pup which could cause just what you mentioned. Is it just me, just the pic, or am I seeing it right?

As for the rings, I would bet that if you were to take them off they are DiMarzio rings, because they are DiMarzio pups. Are the ones on your SL2H-V really metal? They just look like the regular Duncan rings that come with every Duncan, which is why I suspect the difference.


It is weird that the bridge does have the thicker bridge ring though. I have had guitars that came with two DiMarzio neck rings for each pickup. Either way easy cheap swap.

No, it's not weird. It's got a non-recessed Floyd, which puts the bridge up higher than non-recessed, which gives it a similar tilt back to the neck as on a Les Paul that's also got thicker bridge pup rings.

Even my Jackson Mark Morton model has a thicker bridge ring than the neck, even though it's still relatively thin, but still thicker than the neck.

And yeah, what everyone else said... pickup rings are usually plastic and can be short or talls depending on configuration. Metal pickup rings aren't accidental, someone spec'd that version with metal rings...
