  • last minute changes to the CS Star specs

So after 1.3 years go by awaiting my custom Star (pictured below) to be built, I have a sudden case of spec-regret. Or maybe: second guess spec. Whatever the case, I decide that I really have never liked, nor played extensively, a maple boarded guitar. So, what the fuck was I thinking when I ordered this on a pricey CS? Because it looks nice. And it does. I think the maple looks killer! But it never sounded right for me. So, it's gotta go. And a sustainer? My understanding is those things have an active life of about one year before they go to shit. I'm exaggerating for effect obviously but they don't have a good long lifespan.

So, I contact Matt and pleaded with him to try and get the board changed to dark rosewood or ebony with neon green sharkies and the FWAM inlay at the 12th. Then I drop the other shoe re: the sustainer. Eighty-Six the Sustainer and drop in an ol' reliable '59.

Yeah, I'm not on Matt's good buddy list at the moment but I'm reasonably certain he understands you don't drop this kinda coin and settle for dubious and/or questionable specs.

Anyone else out there ever have a last minute spec change on a CS Jackson?

I've never done what you did but you're paying for it and no matter how much the dealer doesn't like it you should get EXACTLY what you want regardless of who it pisses off.
This is what I think of Gibson since 1993. I HATE BEING LEFT HANDED! I rock out to Baby metal because Wilkinsi said I can't listen to Rick Astley anymore.

I think it's more an issue of trying to get spec changes effected this late in the game. Matt knows this and is doing his best to try and accommodate me on this without having JCS go ape-shit. On the other hand, JCS may not have even looked at the spec sheet yet. LOL

Yeah, that's pretty late in the game to be changing specs, especially fairly significant stuff. You might be 'lucky' and they've not started building it yet, and everybody might have got up on the right side of the bed and be obliging to you. But you might not.
Popular is not the same as good
Rare is not the same as valuable
Worth is what someone will pay, not what you want to get

Your real problem IMHO is that, despite Matt's best efforts (which you will certainly get), making a change this late in the game can greatly increase the chances that something gets fuct up on the final build sheet which the CS sees when they actually build the guitar. Ask me how I know . (In my vase it actually tuned out for the best in the end though as the guitar was re-built to even better specs so no complaints down the road, just took forever to get the guitar). Good Luck!

Yeah, I get that. But it's worth a try and dammit, as Lefty pointed out, that's a fuck ton of money I'm shelling out. I'd like to think that it accords me a certain amount of say. Then again...

Maybe you'll get dropped to the bottom of the pile and be waiting another two years? Good luck with the change. Hope it turns out alright for you.

No... Heck no. Once it's ordered that's it. I don't screw around.

                  Maple board is good.
A Jackson maple board is the best.

                    I could see that happening.

They could scrap the old order number and issue a new one with a later start date.

                      Woahhh. Jay, those are beautious.
Like I said, I LOVE the look of the maple board but I've just never been impressed with the tone that comes with. I've owned 3 axes with maple boards. A BC Rich ST III, a Charvel CS Star (which sounded pretty good) and the current Diablo. They all came across a bit bright and lacked something.

LOL. Yeah, I guess I was screwing around when I ordered.

There is a new guy working in the CS, Kurt. Young, cool guy and he reviews the spec before the guitars are put into production. I'm sure Matt knows him and I'm sure this is no big deal IF the guitar has not been started.

But, I'd make up your mind right now and be sure the changes you are asking for are final.

I made a couple minor changed verbally with Kurt when I met him and thus far no mistakes.

Minds made up. If they've already started then by April hopefully I'll be enjoying a guitar with my original specs. Not the end of the world.

Once they start, it only take 2/3 months to finish...
