  • Neck Back Profiles - Opinions

    Hi All

I have been able to find everything from screws to backplates for my Jackson on this forum so I thought I would post this one.

One of the main features I look for in a good guitar is a neck that feels right in my hands. I used to prefer Les Paul and older Ibanez necks (late 70's ones) until I bought my PC-1. There may be other necks that I have not played yet that would be even better for me but the fact is I have become used to the feel and back profile of this neck so I would like to buy a similar neck and bolt it onto a Dinky in a 2 x HB configuration and probably a hardtail. My Jackson version of a Les Paul I suppose. I know it is a 12-16CR with a radius of .825 at the 3rd fret and .890 at the 12th fret but the back profile is what I am unsure about. Could anyone suggest which profile from the list below may be close.

    Medium C .83 X .92
    Chunky 1. C .90 X .90
    Chunky 2. C .90 X .99
    Fat C 1.0 X 1.0
    Fat D .90 X 1.0
    Chunky U .90 X .90
    LP 59 .87 X .97

    Much Appreciated
    Paul

I prefer the Jackson "Speed Neck" I don't really know the measurements aside form what's on the website. I do believe it's 775"-835." In my opinion this is the best neck shape in the world. I love it because it's the perfect amalgamation of thick and thin.
This is what I think of Gibson since 1993. I HATE BEING LEFT HANDED! I rock out to Baby metal because Wilkinsi said I can't listen to Rick Astley anymore.

Usually the profile goes hand and hand with thickness. A thick neck will be a more C shape. A thin neck, like my 2 CS's in the works will be very flat often considered a D but it will really be more like a rectangle with a rad on the ends lol

The Jackson Speed profile is what I consider a "D" shape - it's got the flat spot running down the middle, and feels fatter around the shoulders.

The King V profile is thin, but rounder than the Speed (no flat spot).

Then there's the San Dimas profile, which is round like the KV but the thickness of the Speed, again without the flat spot.

I can't comment on the PC-1 profile, as the neck I had didn't stay long (PC1 neck on a B&W Dragon Dinky) and it's been gone a few years.

As I understand it, the PC1 you buy from a dealer has a thinner neck than the one Phil gets, which is like a baseball bat.

However, if you're planning to get one from Warmoth or some other parts-house, be aware that most places adhere to the Fender heel width religiously, and will not/can not make a Jackson-width heel (whether by choice or lack of skill), so the fit on a Jackson body will suck. If you do find a shop that can build the correct neck, I'd like to know.

?? You sure? I thought the 3 profile options were Speed, KV, and SD?

I own two USA Select KV2's and they both have the speed neck profile and medium frets. Another common misconception about the KV2 is that it has Jumbo frets. They don't. At least mine don't. They have mediums SBB24 to be exact.

There are a lot more neck profiles available than 3 - PC1, EVH, Soloist, Speed, DK1, Charvel San Dimas, Charvel Pointyhead. And I'm sure I've forgotten some. Heck, you can specify anything you want on a custom shop order. Some dealers have even sent necks in to be replicated.

And, yes, KV2s have the speed neck.

Which neck is on the sls and kv2t? I'm not sure what it's called but I don't think it's the speed neck. Anyway, it's my favorite.

Don't forget the USA Select Kelly's have the speed neck too.

The SL1 profile is 790"-850" There are only five neck back shapes available from Jackson now and they're as follows; Standard- 790-850 N/C Speed 775-835 N/C.
                           Dinky 750-810 N/C
                           Classic 735-825 N/C
 Special $250 This profile is a custom job which means you can have any size and shape you want. That's why there's a $250.00 up charge. This comes right from the Jackson Masterbuilt Sheet. Ask Dave Rocks about this as I am sure he had to pay this up charge because he said he got custom neck profiles on both of his upcoming Custom Shop Guitars that he is currently waiting for. Also Goshac those measurements you have on the post above aren't available on any Jackson model unless it was a custom shop guitar and you paid for the "Special" profile.

I did not pay an upcharge for my neck profiles as far as I am aware. Mine are .700/.780

How did you pull that one off? The spec sheet says everyone pays when the neck is different than the offered profiles. By the way $250.00 is the MSRP not street price.
