  • Custom Select w/ SL2H-V control placement?

    Guys,

I love Jackson soloists, but the one thing that drives me crazy is the control knob arrangement. My strumming hand needs more room from the volume knob! I like what Music Zoo did with there SL2H-V group build, but I'm really not a fan of the other features/design/headstock/etc.

I see that in a custom select order you can move the volume knob 1/2 inch to the back of the body, but that isn't enough for me. The 1 and 1/2 inch move on the SL2H-V's makes much more sense to me.

If I order a custom select, do you think I could get them to simply drill control holes where the SL2H-V's are located, and not like a USA SL-2H?

    Thanks!

They'll only move the knob as far as the "Custom Select" work order sheet says and it's 1/2 inch. The only way you're going to get them to move the knob more than that is with a full custom shop order. Sorry for the bad news.
This is what I think of Gibson since 1993. I HATE BEING LEFT HANDED! I rock out to Baby metal because Wilkinsi said I can't listen to Rick Astley anymore.

...and that will be a hell of a lot more money? Even if everything else is like a standard USA soloist??

Not necessarily a lot more money, but a lot more time for sure. And there would be no point keeping the rest standard if you're going to order a CS. You'd at least need to flip the inlays or something...

Worth is what someone will pay, not what you want to get

Talk to Matt at Matt's music. He is one of the sponsors of the forum. He'll give you the best price possible. He'll also be able to answer any questions you might have as well. I wouldn't order a custom shop Jackson from anybody else and I am not saying that because he is a sponsor. I am saying it because he's just about the best in the business. Any guitar I've wanted a quote on he has sent me my custom shop price quotes back in 24 to 48 hours every time. If you call someone else you'll be lucky to get a call back in a week or two.

It's such a minor change for them to do, this is ridiculous!

What about just having them NOT do any controls, and leave that up to me?

That would be a full custom shop order as well. You're best bet is to buy a black Soloist and move the knob yourself and fill the hole bro. That's what I would do.

I can't do that with the soloist I have now. It has a Sustainiac in it, and my tech tells me it needs to have both a volume knob and an intensity knob. I can't fore-go one of them...

Sounds like you're kind of stuck bro. You might have to just bite bullet and go full custom shop because that's the ONLY way you're getting them to move that knob more than 1/2 inch.

When I got my first USA KV2 i was a little uncomfortable with the knobs and the switch being so close. After a while of playing it I've come to love the control set up. I find it's easier to manipulate the controls with them so close to my picking hand.

Or, I could just drill a new hole in my USA sl-2h. Would that be a huge mistake?

my hand kept hitting my volume knob so I modded it somewhat.. well I bought a push/pull pot and modded it.. a volume bypass .. so when I pull it.. the volume doesnt get lower and lower when im playing aggressive rhythms..if you need a schematic of it..Ill post it.. its pretty easy to solder up.. I love it and cant imagine my guitar with out a kill switch and volume bypass ..this mod is also known as a solo mod..but I haste that designation

You're certainly not the first (and likely not the last) to find fault with the vol. knob placement. I won't even look at a Soloist anymore because of that very reason. Had a sweet green ghost flame SL2H and had to let it go because the vol knob kept getting in the way. Yeah, there are mods- taking out tone and moving vol. in it's place, the above mentioned push/pull option, re-drilling and filling (not an option on a more intricate finish like a Ghost Flame, IMO) and perhaps others. I would think that if you're dropping 1+ K on a used one and 2+ K on a new one, you're gonna be a little hesitant to leave an empty "pot hole" or a patched hole with mismatched or slightly off touch up in your nice new/used Soloist. No doubt Mike Learn could do a pro job matching but that's added cost and time outta your hands. Apparently, there are enough players out there who don't mind it (or put up with it) that Jackson sees no need to change it.
